Friday 1 August 2014 - Monthly Climate Summary for Tasmania - Product code IDCKGC17R0
Tasmania in July 2014: a mild month until a cold, wet and windy finish
Tasmania saw many mild days during July 2014, although there were times when cold fronts broke through to bring strong winds, cool weather, rain and highland snow. Most days were warmer than usual, and there were markedly fewer cold days than usual (Hobart for example had just 4 days under 10 °C compared to a long-term average of about 7 such cold days). Overall, mean maximum temperatures were above average by a degree or so with a few sites having their highest July mean daily maximum temperature. As usual in winter there were some cold nights (especially from the 18th to the 24th), but overall minimum temperatures were above average by a degree or so.
There were a few rain events through July as fronts crossed or low pressure systems passed nearby, but the most significant was near the end of the month.A cluster of thunderstorms caused wind damage in the northwest on the 28th, and cold fronts crossing the State brought exceptional winds to many areas on the last three days of the month causing widespread damage about northern western and southern districts. Gusts to 174 km/h were reported at Maatsuyker Island and well over 100 km/h at many other sites. There was also heavy rain near the end of the month, causing flooding in several rivers. A few sites reported their wettest July day on the 31st, and several sites in the southeast and east had their wettest July since 1990 .
- A mild month overall
- Damaging winds, including a gust to 174 km/h at Maatsuyker Island on the 29th
- Wet in the final few days
- Wetter than usual in the east and south

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
A Climate Summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Friday 1 August 2014. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
