Tasmania in September 2014: Generally mild and dry, with a windy finish
Despite a couple of cooler spells during the middle of the month, September was a generally mild across Tasmania. Several sites reported their highest September mean daily maximum temperature, including Hobart where the mean for this month was 17.9 °C, fully 0.5 °C above the previous record (from 1972) and 2.8 °C above the long-term average. The mean daily maximum temperature averaged across Tasmania was 2.0 °C above normal, making it the second-warmest September for the State. The 28th was particularly warm as a strong and gusty northwesterly flow saw temperatures rise across the State. A few sites reported their highest September temperature on record, and Hobart's 28.2 °C was their equal second-highest September temperature (behind the 31.0 °C seen on the 27th in 1987). It was also very windy around this time, with Scotts Peak Dam gusting to 139 km/h, Mt Wellington reported 130 km/h and Hobart experiencing gusts of up to 106 km/h.
Rainfall was below average across Tasmania for September, and although the passage of several fronts during the month brought moderate falls to parts of the north and west very little rain reached the East Coast, the southern Midlands or the Derwent Valley. Bicheno registered only 7 mm for the month, and a few sites had their driest September for many years. The first 9 months of 2014 have been relatively dry across most of Tasmania, with most months quite dry and only April and July being wetter than average in large areas of the State.
- A warm month overall
- Highest September mean maximum temperature for Hobart and several other sites
- Very warm and windy on the 28th
- Below average rain for most areas
- Very dry in parts of the east

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
A Climate Summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Wednesday 1 October 2014. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on
observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from
site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of
record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the
climate record for the site, based on the decile
ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in
decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile
8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time
as a percentage
of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
