Tuesday, 6 January 2015 - Monthly Climate Summary for Tasmania - Product code IDCKGC17R0
Tasmania in December 2014: a mild month
The final month of 2014 was mild for Tasmania: overnight temperatures were well above average, daytime temperatures were generally above average, but the hottest day reached only 31.1 °C. Rainfall was mostly average or below, although some areas were quite dry and there were some locally heavy falls.
The start of the month saw Tasmania's weather controlled mostly by easterly winds, giving the east and north persistently mild overnight temperatures but cloudy and relatively cool days. Westerly winds came to the fore around the middle of the month, and northwesterly winds ahead of an approaching cold front pushed temperatures into the high twenties for most areas from the 14th to the 16th, and saw a few sites reach over 30 °C. The second half of the month was more mixed, with some quite cool days (notably the 26th and 30th) interspersed with warm days (notably the 21st, 28th and 29th). Overall, mean maximum temperatures for the month were above average at almost all sites, typically by around half a degree.
Very mild nights early in the month were balanced against generally below-average nights through the second half: for some sites the morning of the 31st was the coolest for the month. Mean minimum temperatures were above average across the State, typically by about a degree.
Rainfall was mixed, with below-average totals in most areas but a few very wet days. Westerly winds brought light to moderate falls to the west through the second half of the month, enhanced by cold fronts that crossed on the 16th, 18th and 30th. There were also local thunderstorms, including those that brought Hobart large hail and flash flooding on the 16th and a line of intense storms that crossed the southeast on the 29th.
- Daytime temperatures above average overall
- Warm nights, especially in the first half of the month
- Plenty of mild weather, but some cool weather as well
- Rain average or below in most areas
- Some localised thunderstorms

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
A Climate Summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Tuesday 6 January 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
