Monday, 3 October 2016 - Monthly Climate Summary for Tasmania - Product code IDCKGC17R0
Tasmania in September 2016: a wet and windy end to a mild month
A wet and windy end to September gave above-average rainfall totals to the east and much of the north, but fewer westerlies than usual meant the southwest had below-average rain. Temperatures were above average across Tasmania.
A wet and windy end to the month
- Gusty easterly winds on the 29th as the low pressure system that had major impacts in South Australia passed close to Tasmania, with Tasman Island having an exceptional northeasterly wind gust of 113 km/h
- Very heavy rain at the end of the month, with many sites in the east having their highest September daily rainfall on record, led to flash and riverine flooding
A wet month in the east and north
- Localised heavy falls in the northwest on the 9th, giving a few sites their highest September daily rainfall on record
- Monthly totals well above average in the east and mostly above average through the north following the rain events, with a few sites having their highest total September rainfall on record
- Below average rain in the southwest, following fewer westerly winds than usual
A mild month
- The fourth-warmest September on record for Tasmania, with the State's mean maximum temperature 1.44 °C above average and the mean minimum temperature 1.43 °C above average
- Launceston, Devonport and Butlers Gorge had their highest September mean temperature on record
- Some cold nights despite the generally mild weather: Liawenee on the Central Plateau dropped below −4 °C on the 2nd, 7th, 12th and 26th, and Cape Grim had its equal-lowest September temperature on record when it dipped to 3.0 °C on the morning of the 13th
A mild and wet month for Hobart
- Hobart's rain of 94.2 mm was the wettest September since 2009, with most falling around the 15th or in the last two days of the month
- Daytime temperatures were 1.1 °C above the long-term average in Hobart, peaking at 22.5 °C on the 8th
- Hobart's overnight temperatures were 1.6 °C above average; the temperature dropped below 4 °C only once, on the 12th, compared to an average of about six such cold nights in September

Notes
The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 3 October 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
