Thursday, 1 December 2016 - Monthly Climate Summary for Tasmania - Product code IDCKGC17R0
Tasmania in November 2016: cool days, mild nights, wet in the northeast
Daytime temperatures were below average for much of November in Tasmania, but they did reach into the high 20s on the 17th and nights were mostly above average. There was more heavy rain and subsequent flooding in the northeast, and strong winds were again a feature of the month.
Heavy rain and flooding in the northeast
- Heavy rain in the northeast from the 12th to the 14th, as a low pressure system moved over Bass Strait, with many sites recording over 150 mm and some sites having their highest November daily rainfall on record and moderate to locally major flooding in the South Esk and Macquarie rivers
- Well above average November rain in the northeast, and above average over much of the north, but below average in patches of the southeast and King Island; 28% above average for the State as a whole
Mostly cool days, mostly mild nights
- Days generally cooler than the November average, with the statewide mean maximum temperature 0.61 °C below average; much cooler than November last year but still warmer than November 2013
- A very warm day on the 17th as a cold front approached, pushing temperatures into the high 20s at several locations, with another warm day on the 21st (and a warm morning on the 22nd)
- Nights generally warmer than usual because of frequent windy weather, with the statewide mean minimum temperature 0.21 °C above the November average
Strong winds and thunderstorms
- A series of cold fronts early in the month brought strong and gusty winds, peaking on the 5th when several gusts over 100 km/h were recorded and Hogan Island in Bass Strait registered a gust to 143 km/h; this continued the pattern seen for the last several months
- Thunderstorms in the north on the 21st gave a spectacular display of lightning and caused some power outages
Hobart not far from average
- Hobart's mean maximum temperature of 18.6 °C was 0.1 °C below the long-term average (but much warmer than November 2013's mean of 16.9 °C) and included Tasmania's warmest day this November of 29.6 °C on the 17th
- Mostly mild nights in Hobart, with a mean minimum temperature of 10.1 °C coming in 0.8 °C above the long-term average
- November total rain of 65.2 mm in Hobart, wetter than the long-term November average of 54 mm

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Thursday 1 December 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
