Thusday, 5 January 2017 - Monthly Climate Summary for Tasmania - Product code IDCKGC17R0
Tasmania in December 2016: a cool start but a warm end, with some heavy rain
December started relatively cool in Tasmania, but some warm and humid weather toward the end of the month meant temperatures were above average overall. Much of the month was relatively dry for most of the State, but there was statewide rain up to the 9th and some heavy rain toward the end of the month.
Some heavy rain
- Rainfall was above average in the north of the State, and close to average in most other areas; Scottsdale had its highest total December rainfall since 1993
- Westerly winds brought moderate rain to much of Tasmania during the first nine days, with a low close to the State on the 8th giving some heavy falls
- Localised heavy rain and thunderstorms brought some flash flooding on the 29th and 30th as a low of tropical origin passed close to the State
- Much of the State saw little rain from the 10th through to the 28th
A cool start then a warm finish
- Cool temperatures dominated the first three weeks (apart from the 12th and 13th), but warm weather dominated from the 23rd to the end of the month
- Overall, temperatures were above average across the State, with nights especially warm in some areas
- Some humid and warm nights in the last week of the month, with some sites staying well into the high teens on the 26th, 29th and 30th
- Several sites reached into the low 30s on the 13th and the 25th, with 35.8 °C at Ouse the warmest for the month
Strong and damaging winds
- Strong and gusty winds caused some damage in and around Hobart on the 14th; Hobart had a gust to 94 km/h and kunanyi / Mount Wellington reported 124 km/h
- A combination of high astronomical tides, strong winds and low atmospheric pressure saw some low-lying roads covered with water on the 14th
- Strong winds and difficult terrain made a 2000 hectare fire near Runnymede, northeast of Hobart, difficult to contain on the 17th
A wet end to the year in Hobart
- Hobart saw little rain from the 10th until the 27th, but over 40 mm between the 27th and 30th; total rain of 56.6 mm was very close to the December average
- A mean daily maximum temperature of 22.0 °C was 1.6 °C above the long-term average, and just 0.5 °C cooler than December 2015
- Hobart's warmest day was the 13th, with a peak of 30.2 °C
- A mean daily minimum of 12.2 °C was 1.4 °C above average; the coolest morning was the 18th with a minimum of 6.4 °C

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Tuesday 3 January 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
