Tasmania in January 2017: cool days in the west, mild nights overall
Westerly winds were more common than usual over Tasmania in January 2017, resulting in the west having relatively cool days, but nights were mostly mild statewide. Rainfall was close to average for many areas, but below average in the west and above average in the northeast, with some localised heavy falls.
Rain near average overall
- Thunderstorms on the afternoon of the 1st caused some locally heavy falls to the southeast and Derwent Valley, with Tea Tree having its highest January daily rainfall on record
- A trough and front crossing the State on the 13th and 14th brought rain to most areas, with moderate to heavy falls in the west and north
- A low passing just north of the State brought moderate falls to most areas on the 20th and 21st
- Rainfall totals were close to average for much of the State, but below average in parts of the west and above above average in the north and northeast
Cool days in the west, many mild nights
- Cool days were more frequent than warm ones overall, especially in the west, and it was particularly cool from the 18th to the 20th
- There were some very warm days, especially on the 7th, 8th and 23rd in northerly winds ahead of cold fronts
- Overall, daytime maximum temperatures were above the January average in the east of the State, but below average in the northwest
- Mild nights were more frequent than cool ones, although there was a string of cool mornings from the 15th to the 22nd
- The mornings of the 8th and 24th were especially mild, with several sites staying in the high teens or warmer in humid northeasterly winds; Bicheno equalled its record for warmest January night on the 24th
- Overall, overnight minimum temperatures were above average across the State, especially so in the south
Strong winds and low pressure
- Gusty westerly winds were more common than is typical for January
- A number of sites registered wind gusts well over 100 km/h on several days, with Maatsuyker Island's 150 km/h on the 24th just exceeding kunanyi / Mount Wellington's 146 km/h on the 14th
- A low pressure system passing close to the State saw atmospheric pressures drop to near-record low values for January on the 13th
A mild, windy month in Hobart
- Hobart's mean maximum temperature of 23.0 °C was 1.3 °C above the long-term average, but the only day over 30 °C was the 8th with 31.3 °C
- Hobart's mean minimum temperature of 13.5 °C was 1.6 °C above the long-term average, with the temperature not dipping below 20.3 °C on the morning of the 8th
- Hobart registered 60.0 mm of rain for the month, with 33 mm of that falling in less than four hours on the afternoon of the 1st
- Gusty westerly winds were more common than usual for January in Hobart, with gusts over 80 km/h on the 14th, 18th and 24th

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Wednesday 1 February 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
