Victoria in March 2016: Record warmth and near-average rainfall
The first month of autumn began with record warmth for Victoria and despite a cooler end to the month, it was Victoria's warmest March on record overall. Rainfall was close to average for much of the State.
- Victoria's warmest March on record overall
- Second-warmest March for mean minimum temperatures
- Warmer minimum temperatures for Victoria in March than in an average summer
- Sixth-warmest March for mean maximum temperatures
- Close to average rainfall for much of the State
- Strong wind gusts above 100 km/h on 18 March
The first two weeks of March 2016 saw very high temperatures recorded throughout Victoria; many sites had their highest March temperature on record; and warmest March night on record. Victorian overnight temperatures during March were comparable to those normally occurring during January. Many sites had record-breaking runs of consecutive days and nights above threshold temperatures. For example, Echuca recorded eight consecutive days of 38 °C or more from 2-9 March, a record for any time of the year. After a cold front crossed the State on 18 March, cooler conditions prevailed for the rest of the month. However, many sites still finished the month with their highest March mean temperature on record, highest March mean daily maximum temperature on record, or highest March mean daily minimum temperature on record. More information about the heat can be found in Special Climate Statement 55 – prolonged March heatwave affects many parts of Australia.
For the State as a whole, it was the warmest March on record at 2.42 °C above average (the previous warmest was +2.36 °C in 1974), with all areas of the State recording above average mean temperatures, including areas of highest on record in Victoria's north and east. March minimum temperatures were their second-warmest on record at 2.78 °C above average (the record is +2.80 °C in 1974), with much of the eastern half of the State recording highest on record minimum temperatures. Maximum temperatures were the sixth-warmest on record (highest since 2008), with all parts of the State recording mean daytime temperatures above the March average. Maximum temperatures ranged from almost 1 °C above average along the coast to nearly 4 °C above average along the Murray River.
Rainfall in March 2016 was close to average for most of the State. For Victoria as a whole, rainfall was 13% below average. 12 of the past 14 months in Victoria have now recorded rainfall below the long-term average. In March, there were areas of above average rainfall around the Wimmera and Gippsland regions. Isolated patches of below to very much below average rainfall could be found in the far northwest, around the Otway Ranges, north and east of Melbourne, and along parts of Gippsland.
With the passage of a cold front on 18 March, strong maximum wind gusts above 100 km/h were recorded at many sites in the country's southeast including in Victoria. The strongest recorded maximum wind gust on the day was 165 km/h at Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse, beating the site's previous March record of 156 km/h from 2015.

Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
Notes
The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Friday 1 April 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
