Victoria in May 2016: warm nights, rainfall above average
Rainfall was average to above average across Victoria in May. The May statewide mean temperature was the fourth warmest on record for Victoria.
- 4th warmest May on record
- 4th warmest mean minimum temperature on record
- Cool end of the month
- Statewide rainfall 32.5% above the long-term average
- Strongest wind gusts of 131 km/h at Wilsons Promontory
There were a number of days with widespread rainfall associated with the passage of cold fronts in Victoria in May. This resulted in statewide rainfall 32.5% above the long-term mean, the highest May rainfall since 1995. Above average rainfall was recorded in most of the State, while rainfall was near-average in some central parts and in the east, and locally below average in parts of central and east Gippsland. Particularly high daily rainfall totals were recorded on the 9th and 10th when a number of sites, mostly in central and northeast Victoria on the north side of the Great Dividing Range had their highest daily rainfall for May. The highest daily total of 125 mm was at Falls Creek (Rocky Valley) on the 10th, while the highest registered total for the month was 424 mm at Mount Hotham.
Victoria had its fourth warmest May on record, with a statewide mean temperature anomaly of 1.57 °C above the long-term average.
Mean maximum temperatures were generally above to very much above average across the State, with near-average temperatures recorded only around Wodonga. Although the month finished with cooler daytime temperatures, they were above average for most of the month. Some days were unusually warm resulting in a number of sites having their highest May temperature on record. This occured particularly on the 6th, 7th and 15th, in the northerly wind flow preceding approaching cold fronts. The highest daily maximum temperature in Victoria during the month, 28.4 °C, was recorded at Mildura Airport on the 6th.
Victorian mean minimum temperatures were mostly very much above average. The statewide mean minimum temperature was the fourth highest on record for May. The mean temperature anomaly of 1.96 °C above the long-term average, was the highest since 2007. The warmest night during the month saw 17.2 °C at Wilsons Promontory on the 15th. However, there were some cold nights, particularly at the end of the month, when a cold front brought a sharp decrease in temperatures across the State. The coldest night during May, -5.6 °C, was recorded at Mount Buller on the 28th.
There were several days with very strong winds, notably at the beginning and mid-month associated with a passage of cold fronts. The strongest wind gusts during May, 131 km/h, were recorded at Wilsons Promontory several times between the 10th and 13th.

Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
Notes
The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Wednesday 1 June 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
