Victoria in June 2019: mild days, some cold nights

Daytime temperatures in June were warmer than average except in the far southwest, while night-time temperatures were mostly close to average. Rainfall was above average in large areas of central and west Victoria.

Close to average rainfall

  • Averaged across Victoria, rainfall was 3.5% above the long-term June mean of 59 mm
  • Rainfall was above average in large parts of central and western Victoria, but below average in scattered areas mostly in the north of the State
  • A cold front brought widespread rainfall to Victoria on the 3rd and 4th, with many sites in south-central and southeast of the State recording daily totals in excess of 30 mm
  • Another cold front brought rainfall and isolated thunderstorms to western and northeastern Victoria on the 12th and 13th, with daily totals at many locations between 20 and 40 mm
  • The highest daily rainfall total in the State, 87.1 mm, was recorded at Falls Creek (Rocky Valley) on the 13th
  • Month finished with moderate to locally heavy falls across much of the State, ensuring a wetter than usual June overall
  • Several sites had their highest June daily rainfall on record, and Ocean Grove had its record highest June total rainfall
  • Some sites had their highest June total rainfall since at least 1996
  • Over the first half of the year, rainfall has been below average for much of Victoria and very much below average in parts of the northwest and southeast

Mild days, some cold nights

  • Days were warmer than average across the State, except in the far-southwest
  • State-wide, the mean maximum temperature was 0.90 °C above the long-term June average, the highest since 2011
  • Night time temperatures were generally close to average across the State, except in parts of the south where night-time temperatures were warmer than average, and parts of Mallee, North and West Gippsland districts, where they were cooler than average
  • A large, slow-moving high pressure system coupled with a cold airmass resulted in a widespread cold conditions across most of Victoria between the 19th and 26th
  • The coldest day in Victoria during the month saw −3.7 °C at Mount Hotham on the 21st
  • Rhyll, Coldstream and Viewbank had their coldest June day on record on the 23rd
  • Light winds and clear skies under the high pressure system allowed widespread low morning temperatures
  • The lowest night-time temperature recorded in Victoria this month was −8.1 °C at Falls Creek on the 20th
  • For many sites in west Victoria, the night of 24 June was the coldest June night since 2006.
  • Warm daytime and night-time temperatures were recorded at many sites on the 28th and the 29th, in a northerly airflow preceding an approaching cold front
  • Some sites had their warmest June night on record on the 29th
  • The first half of the year has been much warmer than average across Victoria; the mean maximum temperature for January to June was the highest on record, while the mean minimum temperature was fifth warmest on record

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 1 July 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
