Victoria in June 2020: below average rainfall, some cold days and nights

June rainfall in Victoria was below average in large parts of the State. Most of Victoria had warmer than average days, and cooler than average nights.

Below average rainfall

  • Averaged across Victoria, rainfall was 26% below the long-term June mean of 59.4 mm
  • Rainfall was below average in large parts of the State, with several areas in the south recording rainfall very much below average
  • A pair of cold fronts crossed Victoria in the first two days of the month, bringing strong gusty winds, a sharp decrease in temperatures, moderate rainfall mostly to the central and eastern ranges, and snow to the Victorian Alps
  • Between the 3rd and 13th, and from the 26th to the end of the month, weather was dominated by high pressure systems, with generally dry mild days and cold mornings under the clear sky
  • A strong cold front on the 13th brought widespread light to moderate falls with the highest daily totals in the northeast of the State
  • Between the 20th and 24th, a complex low pressure system moved over Victoria, resulting in widespread rainfall and snowfalls in the Victorian Alps
  • The highest daily rainfall total in the State, 62.2 mm, was recorded at Hunters Hill (in northeastern Victoria), on the 21st
  • With 220.7 mm, Falls Creek (Rocky Valley) was the wettest place during the month
  • The statewide year-to-date rainfall total was around 350 mm, 22% above average

Some cold days and nights

  • Averaged across the State, the mean daytime temperature was 0.24 °C above the long-term June average
  • The month started with low daily maximum temperatures, brought by a pool of cold Southern Ocean air which followed the passage of cold fronts
  • This was followed by a period of mostly sunny days and mild daytime temperatures; Mildura Airport saw 21.8 °C on the 19th, the highest daytime temperature recorded in Victoria this month
  • Another cold outbreak followed a complex low pressure system which moved across the State between the 20th and 24th; the lowest daily maximum temperature in Victoria during the month, −1.1 °C, was recorded at Falls Creek on the 22nd
  • Victoria's mean minimum temperature was 0.22 °C below the long-term average for June
  • High pressure systems, characterised by clear nights and light winds, brought some very low daily minimum temperatures between the 3rd and 13th, and from the 26th to the end of the month
  • The lowest daily minimum temperature in Victoria during June, −5.0 °C, was recorded at Strathbogie on the 9th
  • For the year-to-date, mean maximum temperature was 0.35 °C below average, the coldest January to June period since 2011

Snow and frost

  • Heavy snow was recorded in the Victorian Alps in the first two days of winter; Mount Hotham had more than 10 cm of fresh snow
  • Many parts of Victoria experienced large areas of frost on the 9th, when night-time temperatures plummeted due to clear skies and light winds under the strong high-pressure system
  • More snow was recorded in the Alpine area on the 22nd, in the cold air mass associated with a complex low pressure system which moved across Victoria

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Wednesday 1 July 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
