Victoria in November 2021: cool days, wetter than average
Rainfall in November was above average for Victoria as a whole. Daytime temperatures were below average across most of the state's north and east, while night-time temperatures were generally close to average.
Wetter than average
- State-wide, rainfall was 50% above the November average of 52 mm, the highest since 2011.
- Most of eastern and northern Victoria were wetter than average, while parts of Gippsland, Northeast, Northern Country and Mallee districts were much wetter than average.
- Rainfall was only lower than average in the south-west of the state.
- A cold front associated with a low pressure trough that crossed Victoria on the 3rd brought severe thunderstorms, strong winds and widespread, locally heavy rainfall, with daily totals at many sites exceeding 30 mm for the 24 hours to 9am on the 4th.
- A low pressure system over southern NSW moved towards the Victorian border on the 12th bringing rainfall to central and eastern parts of the state, while a strong cold front crossed Victoria on the 14th, with widespread showers, isolated thunderstorms, small hail and gusty winds.
- More rain, mostly in the north-east of the state, with daily totals exceeding 30 mm at many locations, resulted from another low pressure system that developed over central NSW on the 24th.
- With 280.6 mm in total, the wettest place in Victoria this November was Mount Moornapa.
- Some sites had their highest November daily rainfall on record, including St Arnaud and Beazleys Bridge that have more than 100 years of measurements each.
- Some sites had their highest total November rainfall on record, or their highest total November rainfall for at least 20 years.
Below average maximum temperatures, but warm end to the month
- For much of Victoria daytime temperatures were cooler than average, with temperatures more than 1 degree cooler than average in most of the state's east and north.
- For the state as a whole, the mean maximum temperature was 1.01 °C below average, the lowest since 2001.
- Some sites had their lowest November mean daily maximum temperature on record, while many sites had their lowest November mean daily maximum temperature for at least 20 years.
- Shepparton Airport, Horsham Aerodrome and Swan Hill Aerodrome had their coldest November day (lowest maximum temperature) on record on the 12th.
- However, Victoria experienced several warm days during November; particularly warm was the 30th when most sites recorded temperatures higher than 30 °C; the highest maximum temperature in Victoria, 35.1 °C, was recorded on that day at Hopetoun Airport and Walpeup Research.
- Minimum temperatures were close to average across most of the state, but warmer than average in part of Victoria's south-east.
- State-wide, mean minimum temperatures were 0.50 °C above average for the month.
Thunderstorms, floods, hail and snow
- Heavy rainfall/thunderstorm on the 3rd caused flash flooding in St Arnaud, forcing residents to leave their houses.
- 3 to 4 cm hail was reported at Nagambie (north of Melbourne) on the 6th, associated with a severe thunderstorm.
- Snow on the Victorian Alps was recorded on the 14th following the passage of a strong cold front.
- Strong and gusty winds were observed both ahead of and behind the cold front that crossed Victoria on the 14th; the State Emergency Service responded to more than 300 calls, mostly for fallen trees, and hundred of homes were left without power. The strongest wind gust in the state this month, 130 km/h, was recorded at the Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse on both the 14th and 15th.

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Thursday 2 December 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
