Rainfall
Despite several strong cold fronts moving through southern WA during June 2011, rainfall totals were generally near to or below average across the Southwest Land Division (SWLD), with very much below average rainfall notable in the Southeast Coastal district. Other areas of below to very much below average were observed in central parts of WA. Rainfall was above to very much above average in parts of the Goldfields, Eucla, and Interior (see June 2011 rainfall totals & deciles), with some sites reporting their highest June rainfall in over 30 years. When averaged across the state as a whole, rainfall during June 2011 was near average, however the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay) observed below average rainfall. Comparable records commenced in 1900.
A strong cold front produced moderate to heavy rainfall in western parts of the SWLD at the start of June, with daily rainfall totals of 20 to 40 mm recorded in the 24 hours to 9 am on the 2nd in the Lower West and parts of the Southwest district. Some damage was reported in Perth, mainly due to flash flooding.
A cloudband over the Pilbara produced heavy rainfall on the 6th and 7th, particularly at Onslow which observed 30.4 mm in the 24 hours to 9am on the 6th, followed by 70.4 mm in the 24 hours to 9am on the 7th. The rainfall total over the two days was more than twice the June monthly average rainfall at Onslow. Onslow Airport and Exmouth Town observed 64.6 mm and 53.2 mm respectively in the 24 hours to 9am on the 7th.
A middle level low over the southeast of the state resulted in significant rainfall in the Eucla on the 7th and 8th, with Arubiddy observing 32.4 mm in the 24 hours to 9am on the 8th, which is a June record for the site. Partly as a result of this event, Arubiddy observed its 2nd wettest June in 47 years of record with 72.6 mm, just behind the 74.5 mm observed in 1968, whilst Eyre observed its 3rd wettest June on record.
Heavy rainfall was observed in the SWLD on the afternoon of the 24th and into the morning of the 25th as a strong cold front crossed the west coast, with widespread falls of 25 to 50 mm in southwest parts of the division, and isolated heavier falls of 50 to 70 mm in the Lower West and parts of the Southwest. Wokalup in the Southwest district broke its highest June daily rainfall record with 66.2 mm in the 24 hours to 9am on the 25th, while Worsley Downs observed 70.0 mm and Dwellingup 68.0 mm during the same event. Swanbourne recorded 32.6 mm in 30 minutes (between 1745 WST and 1814 WST) on the 24th, which equates to a 1 in 50 to 1 in 100 year event, whilst Swanbourne's 24 hour rainfall total of 63.8 mm to 9 am on the 25th exceeded its previous highest daily total for June in 18 years of record, which was 53.0 mm on 4 June 2002
The passage of a strong cold front across the SWLD on the 28th produced severe wind gusts, heavy rain and abnormally high tides. A number of severe wind gusts were observed, mainly in coastal parts of the Southwest district where Cape Naturaliste recorded the strongest gust recorded for this event, and the month, of 130 km/h at 0409 WST on the 28th. The highest rainfall observed was 49.4 mm in the 24hrs to 9am on the 28th at Myalup, whilst Bedfordale recorded 54.4 mm in the 24 hours to 9am on the 29th . A number of homes in the Southwest and Lower West received minor structural damage as a result of the winds, particularly in Quindalup (near Busselton), Mandurah and Rockingham, and at least one house reportedly received major damage.
Maximum temperature
Mean maxima during June 2011 were below average over much of the northeast of WA, with areas of very much below average maximum temperature in the north and east Kimberley where temperatures were up to 3 °C cooler than normal. Troughton Island in the far north Kimberley observed its coolest June on record with an average of 27.0 °C, breaking the previous record of 27.4 °C set in 1967. In contrast, the southwest of WA saw above average mean maximum temperatures, with an area of very much above average mean maxima in south coast SWLD districts (see June 2011 mean maximum temperature decile & anomaly maps). Albany observed its warmest June in 33 years, and its 3rd warmest June on record, with a mean maximum temperature of 18.2 °C, equal with June 1940, but well below the record of 18.8 °C set in 1921.
A number of cool days were observed in northern WA during the middle part of the month, particularly in the Kimberley from the 10th through to the 15th as cool air from the southeast of Australia moved over the region, with most sites observing daily maximum temperatures of less than 25 °C.
When averaged across the state, the mean maximum temperature for WA for June 2011 was near average, however the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay) was in the above average range. The Lower Southwest has experienced its warmest start to the year (January to June) on record, with a mean maximum temperature of 25.4 °C, which is 1.3 °C above the average, and 0.1°C above the previous record of 25.3 °C set in 1972. Comparable records commenced in 1950.
Minimum temperature
Mean minimum temperatures during June 2011 were below to very much below average across the north of WA, with an area of lowest on record in the north and east Kimberley where temperatures were up to 5 °C cooler than normal. Several sites in the Pilbara and Kimberley recorded their coldest June in at least 30 years and Wyndham recorded its coolest month on record with a mean minimum temperature of 12.4 °C, easily breaking the previous record for any month of 14.1 °C set in July 2006 and July 2002. In contrast, the south of WA saw above to very much above average mean minima (see June 2011 minimum temperature decile & anomaly maps) with temperatures up to 2 °C above normal in the southeast of the state. Consequently, Albany observed its warmest June in 93 years of record with a mean minimum of 11.1 °C, exceeding the previous record of 11.0 °C set in June 1959.
A number of cool nights were observed in northern WA during the middle to latter part of the month, particularly in the Kimberley. Wyndham observed its coolest night on record for any month, with 8.3 °C on the 14th, breaking the previous record of 8.6 °C on 29 June 2004. Telfer Aerodrome also observed its coolest night on record on the 14th with 2.1 °C breaking the previous record of 2.5 °C set on 19 June 1976, and 4 August 1975.
When averaged across WA, mean minimum temperatures during June 2011 were below average; however the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay) was above average. The Lower Southwest has experienced its warmest start to the year (January to June) on record, with a mean minimum temperature of 13.3 °C, which is 1.4 °C above the average, and 0.4 °C above the previous record of 12.9 °C set in 1978. Comparable records commenced in 1950.

Extremes Records Summaries Important notes the top
Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Friday 1 July 2011. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available
years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for
sites with less than 10 years of record.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Records in this summary are based on sites with at least 30 years of data.
