Rainfall
Rainfall in November 2013 was below to very much below average over most of the Southwest Land Division (SWLD) and western Gascoyne. Conversely, much of the Kimberley, Northern and Southern Interior, parts of the inland Gascoyne, southeast Goldfields, northeast Southeast Coastal, and Eucla received above to very much above average rainfall. Cygnet Bay and Sophie Downs in the Kimberley both recorded their wettest November on record.
The Kimberley saw regular thunderstorm activity during November, with the highest daily fall in WA occurring at Emma Gorge in the 24 hours to 0900 WST on the 22nd with 120.0 mm recorded. The passage of tropical cyclone Alessia near the north Kimberley coast on the 23rd and 24th also brought some heavy falls to the region, and Cygnet Bay recorded its highest daily fall in November in 50 years of recording with 41.0 mm on the 23rd. A cloudband that developed over the southern Goldfields and adjacent parts of neighbouring districts on the morning of the 27th brought heavy rainfall to the region. The Norseman aerodrome weather station reported 74.4 mm between 0400 WST and 1400 WST on the 27th, including 29.4 mm between 0821 WST and 0921 WST, which was a 1 in 50 to 1 in 100 year event. The cloudband moved slowly eastward and Balladonia recorded 47.2 mm in the 24 hours to 0900 WST on the 28th, its highest November daily fall in 89 years of record.
Averaged across WA as a whole, rainfall in November 2013 was above average, however the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay) and the Southwest Land Division (SWLD) saw below average rainfall.
Maximum temperature
Very much above average mean maximum temperatures were observed over western and central WA, as well as parts of the west Kimberley, with up to 4 °C warmer than normal maxima observed in the Southern Interior, northern Goldfields, south Gascoyne, Central West, Lower West, and Central Wheat Belt. Several sites in these regions recorded their warmest November on record. Much of northern and southeast WA observed near average or below average November maximum temperatures.
Averaged across the state as a whole, the mean maximum temperature for WA in November 2013 was above average. This continues WA's run of above average mean monthly maxima since April 2012, with only June 2013 being below the average, and as a result WA has recorded its warmest January to November period on record in 2013. For the Lower Southwest, the mean maximum temperature in November 2013 ranked eighth warmest for November since comparable records commenced in 1910, and led to the January to November period being equal third warmest on record.
Minimum temperatures
Most of western and southern WA saw above to very much above average mean minimum temperatures in November 2013, with areas of the Central West, south Gascoyne, and Central Wheat Belt 3 °C to 4 °C warmer than normal. A number of sites in the Gascoyne, Goldfields, and SWLD recorded their highest mean minimum temperature for November on record.
Averaged across the state as a whole, the mean minimum temperature for WA in November 2013 was eighth warmest on record, whilst averaged across the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay), the mean minimum temperature ranked second warmest on record. Persistent warmer than normal mean minimum temperatures for WA since September 2012 have led to the State recording its second warmest January to November period since comparable records commenced in 1901, only behind 1998. The Lower Southwest has similarly recorded its second warmest January to November period, with nine of the eleven months this year being above the average. Only 2011 saw a greater mean minimum in the Lower Southwest.Other Phenomena
Tropical cyclone Alessia was the first tropical cyclone for the season in the Australian region. A tropical low developed south of Java on the 20th and moved to the southeast and intensified into a category one tropical cyclone in the evening of the 22nd off the west Kimberley coast. Alessia tracked eastward near the north Kimberley coast on the 23rd and 24th before weakening below tropical cyclone intensity on the evening of the 24th as it crossed the western Top End of the Northern Territory. The impacts of Alessia were generally minor with some heavy rainfall and a wind gust to 94 km/h reported at Troughton Island at 0011 WST on the 24th.

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 3 pm on Sunday 1 December 2013. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from all
available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are
not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot
then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the
climate record for the site, based on the decile
ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in
decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile
8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time
as a percentage
of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is being used for temperature area averages from December 2012 onwards. The major change from earlier datasets is that the ACORN-SAT dataset commences in 1910, rather than 1950, and hence rankings are calculated using a larger set of years.
