Rainfall
February 2014 rainfall was above to very much above average over much of the Kimberley, Northern and Southern Interior, Eucla, southeast Gascoyne, and northern Goldfields. A very active monsoon in the first half of the month brought some very heavy falls and Kununurra Aerodrome in the east Kimberley recorded its wettest month in 41 years of record with 597.2 mm, which was just over 170 mm more than its previous wettest February, and just over 70 mm greater than its previous wettest month of 522.4 mm in March 2006. Microwave Tower, approximately 15 km to the east of Kununurra, recorded a monthly total 804.8 mm, which was the highest monthly total rainfall in the State for the month, and is the third highest monthly total rainfall recorded in February in WA, the highest being 843.5 mm at Mount Hart Station in the Kimberley in February 1993. In stark contrast, western parts of the Southwest Land Division and large parts of the Gascoyne and Pilbara saw below to very much below average rainfall, with many sites recording no rainfall during the month, and recorded one of the driest February's on record.
Averaged across WA as a whole, rainfall in February 2014 was above average, however the Lower Southwest in contrast was below average. Averaged across the Southwest Land Division (SWLD), February 2014 rainfall was near average. Two consecutive below average months in the Lower Southwest (January was eighth driest since records commenced in 1900) have led to the region having its eighth driest start to the year.
During the first half of February, frequent showers and thunderstorms with moderate to heavy rainfall were reported in the north and east Kimberley. A slow moving tropical low crossed the WA/NT border in the evening on the 6th, then moved southwest through the Kimberley, Northern Interior, and east Pilbara before tracking south-southeast through central and southeast WA from the 7th to 14th. Heavy rainfall was observed along the path of the tropical low in north, central, and eastern WA, with daily rainfall totals over 100 mm recorded on many occasions. A number of sites in the Kimberley, Southern Interior, and Eucla recorded their highest daily rainfall in February on record during the event . Microwave Tower (15 km east of Kununurra) recorded a daily rainfall total of 308.8 mm on the 8th, which was the highest daily fall in WA for the month, and the highest daily rainfall in WA for almost three years, since 351.0 mm was recorded on 14 March 2011 at Durack Range in the Kimberley.
Maximum temperature
Mean maximum temperatures were above to very much above average in western parts of WA, with means up to 5 °C warmer than normal in the Shark Bay area. Below to very much below average mean maximum temperatures were reported in the east Kimberley, Northern Interior, Southern Interior, Goldfields, eastern Southeast Coastal, and western Eucla, associated with the tropical low track during the month, with means up to 4 °C cooler than normal in the western Eucla and in the far southeast Kimberley.
Averaged across the state as a whole, the mean maximum temperature for WA in February 2014 was near average. For the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay) however, sunny conditions with little or no rainfall produced above average temperatures.
The highest daily temperatures in WA during February 2014 were recorded in the west Pilbara on the 8th and 9th in easterly winds as the tropical low tracked westward across the Kimberley. Mardie recorded a maximum temperature of 45.7 °C on the 8th, and Emu Creek also recorded a maximum of 45.7 °C on the 9th. A trough passage early on the 5th brought cool conditions to the south coast on the 6th in a southeasterly flow, and North Walpole recorded the lowest maximum temperature in WA for the month with a top of 17.8 °C.
Minimum temperatures
Mean minimum temperatures were above to very much above average in the west Pilbara, Gascoyne, Central West, Central Wheat Belt, Lower West, and eastern Eucla, with means up to 3 °C warmer than normal in the northern Central West and inland southwest Gascoyne. Onslow Airport in the west Pilbara recorded a mean minimum of 26.4 °C, which is the equal warmest February in terms of night-time temperatures in 48 years of record at the site, equal with February 2007. Mean minimum temperatures were below average in the east Kimberley and adjacent Northern Interior. Warmun in the east Kimberley recorded a mean minimum of 23.5 °C, which is the lowest February mean minimum at the site for 36 years, since 22.4 °C was recorded in February 1978.
The mean minimum temperature in February 2014 was near average for the State as a whole, but above average for the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay).
Very warm nights were reported in the Pilbara in the first ten days of February, particularly from the 8th to the 10th in western parts following very hot days. Karratha recorded a minimum temperature of 30.7 °C on the 10th, the highest minimum in WA for the month. Further south however, cool nights were reported across much of the Southwest Land Division on the 7th and 8th as the passage of a cold front to the south brought cooler southerly air over the region. Bridgetown recorded a minimum of 3.8 °C on the 9th, the lowest temperature in the State for February 2014.

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Monday 3 March 2014. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is being used for temperature area averages from December 2012 onwards. The major change from earlier datasets is that the ACORN-SAT dataset commences in 1910, rather than 1950, and hence rankings are calculated using a larger set of years.
