Western Australia in October 2014: Hottest October on record
October 2014 in WA was the warmest October on record for both mean maximum temperature and mean minimum temperature since records commenced in 1910.
Mean maximum temperatures were above to very much above average across most of the state, with record high mean maxima for October reported in the South West Land Division (SWLD), southern Gascoyne, Goldfields, inland east Pilbara, Southern Interior, and Eucla. Apart from most of the Kimberley, near the WA west coast, and the eastern Eucla coast, mean maximum temperatures were 2 ° C to 4 °C warmer than normal across WA, and were up to 6 °C warmer than normal in the central Southern Interior. Averaged across the state, the mean maximum temperature in October 2014 was 2.9 °C above the long-term average and ranked as the warmest October on record. For the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay), October 2014 was 2.5 °C above average, and the third warmest October on record.
Mean minimum temperatures were above average to very much above average across much of the state, apart from the central and east Kimberley, and northeast Northern Interior, with record high mean minma reported in the SWLD, southern Gascoyne, Goldfields, and Eucla. Mean minimum temperatures were 2 °C to 3 °C warmer than normal in a broad area across the east Pilbara, western Northern Interior, and central and southeastern WA, and were up to 6 °C warmer than normal in the central Southern Interior, whilst minimum temperatures in the east Kimberley were 1 °C to 2 °C cooler than normal. Averaged across the state, the mean minimum temperature in October 2014 was 2.1 °C above the long-term average and ranked as the warmest October on record. When averaged across the Lower Southwest, October 2014 ranked fifth warmest on record.
Rainfall in October 2014 in WA was above to very much above average in parts of the Pilbara, east Gascoyne, Goldfields, eastern SWLD, and western parts of the Northern and Southern Interior. Large parts of the southern SWLD recorded their wettest October for at least 20 years, and some sites, particularly in the Southeast Coastal, recorded their wettest October on record. Conversely, areas of the west Gascoyne, western SWLD, central and east Kimberley, eastern Northern Interior and northeast Southern Interior recorded below to very much below average rainfall. When averaged across the State as a whole, rainfall in October 2014 was near average; similarly rainfall was also near average for the SWLD and the Lower Southwest when averaged across those regions.
- Hottest October on record for day-time temperature for WA with a 2.9 °C warm anomaly, 3rd warmest on record for the Lower Southwest
- Hottest October on record for night-time temperature for WA with a 2.1 °C warm anomaly, 5th warmest on record for the Lower Southwest
- Bidyadanga recorded a maximum temperature of 45.2 °C on the 9th, the earliest day on record in October in Australia with temperature over 45 °C. The previous record was on the 21st October 2002 when multiple sites in the Kimberley and Pilbara recorded maximum temperatures ranging from 45.2 °C to 46.7 °C. High temperatures in the west Kimberley and east Pilbara in the second week of the month also caused Derby Aerodrome to record its hottest October day in 30 years with 44.1 °C on the 7th.
- A trough passage through the SWLD on the 16th led to unusually high temperatures across southern WA, with Eneabba (15th) and Esperance Aerodrome (16th) breaking their previous highest October maximum temperature, whilst Balladonia recorded its highest October minimum temperature on the 17th.
- A low pressure system developed over southwest WA on the 18th and 19th
before moving off the south coast on the 20th, bringing widespread thunderstorms
and heavy rainfall across central and southern WA. A number of sites recorded
daily rainfall totals in the 30 mm to 100 mm range and many sites in the SWLD,
as well as Laverton Aerodrome in the Goldfields, recorded their wettest October
day on record on the 19th or 20th. A supercell thunderstorm formed near New
Norcia on the 18th and tracked to the southwest and over the Perth Metropolitan
area in the afternoon producing heavy rainfall and large amounts of small
hail. Severe thunderstorms redeveloped again on the 19th with several locations
in eastern parts of the SWLD recording heavy rainfall and severe wind gusts.
- Widespread severe thunderstorms occurred along a surface trough through southern and central parts of the SWLD on the 22nd. Hail larger than 20 cent coins (3 cm) and flash flooding were reported in the proximity of Boyup Brook in the South West district.

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
A Climate Summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 3 November 2014. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
