Western Australia in February 2015: Second hottest on record
Averaged across the State, the mean temperature (mean of maximum and minimum temperatures) was 30.39 °C, which is 2.3 °C above the long-term average, and the second hottest February on record for WA since comparable data commenced in 1910. The warmest February on record is 30.50 °C in February 2007. Averaged across the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay), the February mean temperature for the region was 24.41 °C, which is 2.13 °C above the long-term average, and the third warmest February on record.
Mean maximum temperatures were above to very much above average across the state, with highest on record values in the east Pilbara, Kimberley plateau, Goldfields, and eastern parts of the South West Land Division (SWLD), whilst a number of sites in the west Kimberley, Eucla, and the SWLD experienced their hottest February for at least twenty years. Averaged across the State, the mean maximum temperature was 3.05 ° C above the long-term average, which is the second highest mean maximum temperature on record for WA. For the Lower Southwest, the mean maximum was 2.71 °C above the long-term average, which is the fourth highest mean maximum temperature on record.
Roebourne Airport recorded a daily maximum temperature of 49.2 °C on the 20th, which was the highest temperature of the month in WA, the highest temperature at Roebourne Airport in its 13 years of record, and the equal fourth highest February temperature on record in WA. Roebourne Airport also recorded three consecutive days with maximum temperatures at or above 48 °C (48.6 °C on the 19th, 48.0 °C on the 20th, and 49.2 °C on the 21st). February maximum temperature records were also registered at several locations across the State during the month, including in the Southeast Coastal on the 9th, far west Kimberley on the 10th, Goldfields on the 13th and Eucla on the 14th, east Kimberley and east Pilbara on the 18th, and central Kimberley on the 19th.
Mean minimum temperatures were above to very much above average over most of WA in February, apart from much of the Kimberley and northeastern parts of the Northern Interior, which saw near average to below average mean minimum temperatures. Some sites near the west Pilbara coast, in the Goldfields and western Southern Interior, and in the South Coastal recorded their highest mean minimum temperature in February on record. Averaged across the State, the mean minimum temperature was 1.54 ° C above the long-term average, which is the second highest mean minimum temperature on record. For the Lower Southwest the mean minimum was 1.55 °C above the long-term average, which is the sixth highest mean minimum temperature on record.
Wittenoom recorded a daily minimum temperature of 35.1 °C on the 21st, which is the highest minimum temperature on record in February in Australia, surpassing the previous national record of 35.0 °C set at Moomba Airport in South Australia on 17 February 2004. Other sites in the Pilbara and west Kimberley also recorded their highest February minimum temperature during the month, particularly in the period from the 19th to 21st, whilst a couple of sites in the inland Gascoyne saw record high minima on the 11th. Broome Airport broke its 76 year record on three occasions during the month.
Rainfall was below to very much below average over much of northern WA in February, as well as in parts of the Southeast Coastal, Goldfields, and eastern Eucla. A number of sites in the Kimberley either experienced their driest February on record, or their driest February for at least 20 years. Above average rainfall was mainly confined to parts of the Gascoyne and northwest SWLD, and western Eucla.
A stagnant surface trough near the west coast combined with a moist air mass to produce frequent thunderstorms in the SWLD from the 1st to 3rd. Hail and wind damage were reported from Geraldton to Perth with approximated 30,000 homes without power. A severe thunderstorm occurred at Kununurra in the Kimberley on the 12th as the Aerodrome recorded a wind gust of 144 km/h, which is the tenth highest severe thunderstorm wind gust on record in WA.
- Second highest February day-time temperature on record for WA; fourth highest for Lower Southwest
- Second highest February night-time temperature on record for WA; sixth highest for Lower Southwest
- Highest minimum temperature in February in Australia at Wittenoom on the 21st (35.1 °C)

Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
A Climate Summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 3 March 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
