Western Australia in April 2015: sixth coolest April on record
The Statewide mean day-time temperature in April was the sixth lowest on record.
- An extensive cloudband and the passage of ex-tropical cyclone Ikola brought moderate to heavy rainfall to parts of the Southwest Land Division from the 6th to 12th.
- Record low maximum temperatures and moderate to heavy rainfall were recorded in the Pilbara, Northern Interior, and Northern Goldfields on the 19th to 22nd
- Tropical cyclone Quang formed off the northwest coast towards the end of month.
Mean maximum temperatures were below to very much below average over most of WA in April 2015, and a few sites in the west Pilbara recorded their mildest April day-time temperatures on record, whilst sites in the Goldfields and Eucla recorded their mildest April for at least 20 years. Near average temperatures were recorded along the west coast and western south coasts, whilst much of the Kimberley saw near average to above average maxima. Averaged across the State, the mean maximum temperature was -1.78 °C below the long-term average, and was the sixth coolest April on record for WA, and the coolest for nine years, since 2006. The Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay) recorded a mean maximum -0.12 °C below the long-term mean, only its fourth below average month in the past five years.
Hot days were experienced in the north of the State in the first week of April, with daily maxima in the low-forties. Argyle Aerodrome in the East Kimberley recorded a daily maximum temperature of 40.5 °C on the 2nd, its warmest April day in 21 years of record and first 40 °C April day, overtaking the previous record of 39.7 °C on 6 April 2010. Mandora recorded the highest temperature of the month in WA with a daily maximum temperature of 41.2 °C on the 5th, which is its highest temperature in April for six years, since 4 April 1999, when a daily maximum temperature of 41.8 °C was recorded.
Persistent wet and cloudy conditions in northwest and central WA between the 18th and 22nd resulted in low day-time temperatures, with daily maxima often 10 °C to 16 °C cooler than normal. During this period, many sites in the Pilbara, northern Goldfields, and Southern Interior experienced their coolest April day on record, and sites near the Pilbara coast broke their previous April record on several days. Karratha Aerodrome saw its previous lowest April maximum in 22 years of record (26.1°C on 6 April 2006) broken on four consecutive days, with maximum temperatures of 21.2 °C on the 19th; 22.3 °C on the 20th; 19.6 °C on the 21st; and 23.3 °C on the 22nd. Port Hedland Airport recorded a maximum of 19.7 °C on the 20th, which was its first April day below 20 °C in 67 years of record, however this record was immediately broken the following day with a maximum temperature of 19.6 °C. These temperatures were below both the previous Port Hedland Airport April record of 20.6 °C on 7 April 1999, and the Port Hedland Post Office record of 20.1 °C on 6 April 1933, and thus were the lowest April maxima recorded in the town since records commenced in 1913.
Most of WA saw near average overnight temperatures in April, however above to very much above average mean minima were recorded near the Pilbara coast, in the west Gascoyne, Central West, and eastern parts of the Eucla and Southern Interior, whilst areas of below average mean minima were scattered through the southern Kimberley, inland southeast Pilbara, Northern Interior, northeast Southern Interior, Goldfields, eastern Southeast Coastal, and western Eucla. Eyre in the Eucla recorded its coolest April, in terms of mean minimum temperatures, in 55 years of record. Averaged across the State, the mean minimum temperature was near average. For the Lower Southwest, the mean minimum temperature was slightly below average, and only the fifth below average monthly mean minimum temperature in the past 31 months, since October 2012.
Cold nights were recorded across southern parts of the State in the second half of the month and a minimum temperature of 0.2 °C at Eyre on the 21st was the lowest temperature of April 2015 in WA. Forrest's overnight temperature of 4.0 °C on the 30th was its lowest temperature in April in 23 years of record at the current site, and the lowest April temperature in Forrest for over 45 years, since a minimum of 3.4 °C was registered at the old site on 27 April 1970.
Rainfall was above to very much above average in parts of the Southwest Land Division (SWLD), mainly in the South West, South Coastal, and Central West, as well as in the southwest Gascoyne and a broad area covering much of the Pilbara, Southern Interior and Goldfields, with a number of sites, mainly in the SWLD, recording their highest April rainfall for at least 20 years. Leeman in the Central West recorded its highest April total rainfall in 30 years of record. Below average to very much below average rainfall was recorded in the inland Gascoyne, and small parts of the eastern Northern Interior and north Kimberley. Averaged across the State, April 2015 rainfall was near average. When averaged across the South West Land Division (SWLD) as well as the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay), April 2015 rainfall was above average, and the wettest April since 2008.
Tropical cyclone Ikola developed in the Indian Ocean west of the Cocos Islands in the first week of April and generally tracked to the southeast. It weakened below tropical cyclone intensity on the 8th, well west of WA, but continued to move to the southeast and moved over the Southwest district on the 10th to became a slow moving low off the WA south coast late in the day. The low produced moderate to heavy rainfall in various locations in the Gascoyne, SWLD, and southern Goldfields from the 6th to 12th, with a few sites in the Central West, Southwest, and South Coastal recording their highest daily rainfall in April on record on the 9th and 10th. Tamaru in the South Coastal recorded a daily total of 99.6 mm on the 10th, which was the highest daily rainfall in April 2015 in WA, and the wettest April day at Tamaru in 50 years of record, exceeding the previous record of 86.7 mm on 1 April 2005.
A low off the northwest coast produced a cloudband and thunderstorm activity that brought moderate to heavy rainfall to the southern Kimberley, Pilbara, Northern Interior and Northern Goldfields from the 18th to 22nd, and Yulmbu in the Kimberley recorded its highest April daily fall in 47 years of record as a result.
A trough and a weak low off the southwest coast produced some moderate rainfall along the South West coast at the end of April, and mainly light rainfall in the Lower West, inland South West, and South Coastal .

Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
A Climate Summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Friday 1 May 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
