Western Australia in May 2015: unseasonably wet in the northwest

  • Tropical cyclone Quang produced moderate to heavy rainfall in the northwest on the 1st and 2nd

Parts of the Pilbara, Northeast Gascoyne, Northern and Southern Interior saw unseasonably wet conditions in May 2015, with a few sites recording their wettest May on record, and many sites recording their wettest May for over twenty years. In contrast, most of the southern half of WA, and the Kimberley, recorded below to very much below average rainfall. Several sites in the Southwest Land Division (SWLD) experienced their driest May for at least 20 years. When averaged across the SWLD, May 2015 was the 17th driest May on record, since the comparable records commenced in 1900, whilst for WA as a whole, rainfall was near average, mostly due to the unseasonable rainfall in the Pilbara.

Tropical cyclone Quang approached the west Pilbara coast from the northwest on 1 May and weakened to a tropical low while crossing the coast between Ex mouth and Onslow in the afternoon. Moderate to heavy rainfall was recorded in large parts of the Pilbara at the start of May as a result, and Coolawanyah in the inland Pilbara recorded it highest May daily fall on the 2nd, in 84 years of record, with a total of 75.6 mm. A low pressure system with embedded cold fronts moved through west coast and southwest WA on the 16th and 17th, bringing widespread rainfall to these regions, with moderate to heavy falls recorded in the Lower West and South West. A cloudband developed over northwest and central WA in the second half of the month and produced moderate to heavy rainfall in the Pilbara, Northeast Gascoyne, Northern and Southern Interior from the 21st to 29th.

Mean maximum temperatures were below to very much below average over a broad area from the northwest, through central and southeast WA, as well as near the south coast, whilst most of the Kimberley saw above to very much above average mean maximum temperatures. Near average conditions were reported in the remainder of WA. Averaged across the State, the mean maximum temperature in May 2015 was below the long-term average, and the coolest May for the State for four years, since 2011. The Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay) as a whole was also slightly below average, and the coolest May for eight years, since 2007.

Hot days with daily maxima in the high-thirties were recorded in the Kimberley from the 5th to 7th, and Argyle Aerodrome recorded a daily maximum temperature of 38.0 °C on the 6th, its warmest May day in 21 years of record. Wyndham Aerodrome and Bidyadanga recorded the highest temperature of the month in WA with a daily maximum temperature of 38.7 °C on the 5th and 7th respectively.

Most of WA saw near average overnight temperatures in May, however below to very much below average mean minima were recorded in the Kimberley and eastern parts of the Northern Interior, west Pilbara and northwest Gascoyne, the SWLD and the western Eucla, and whilst areas of above average mean minima were confined to parts of the Pilbara, Southern Interior, and eastern Eucla. Averaged across the State, the mean minimum temperature was below average. The Lower Southwest also was 1.5 °C below average, which was the coolest May for six years, since 2009.

Broome Airport recorded a terrestrial minimum temperature (temperature at ground level) of 3.0 °C on the 16th, its lowest May terrestrial minimum in 49 years of record, and on that day recorded a minimum temperature (in the Stevenson screen) of 7.7 °C , which is the equal lowest minimum temperature in May in 76 years of record, equal with 7.7 °C on 28 May 2002. Eyre in the Eucla recorded four nights with temperatures below zero in May, which is the equal highest number of below zero nights in May at the site in its 26 years of record, equal with May 1996, whilst a minimum of -2.5 °C at Eyre on the 14th was the lowest temperature of May 2015 in WA, and Eyre's lowest temperature on record for May, exceeding the previous lowest of -2.4 °C on 28 May 2011.

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

A Climate Summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Tuesday 2 June 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
