Western Australia in October 2015: Warmest October on record

For WA as a whole, October 2015 was the warmest October on record. Rainfall was near average when averaged across WA, however it was the tenth driest October on record when averaged across the South West Land Division (SWLD).

  • Warmest October on record for both mean maximum and minimum temperatures
  • Highest mean maximum temperature in October for the South West Land Division
  • Second highest mean minimum temperature in October for the South West Land Division
  • Near average rainfall for WA; tenth driest October for SWLD
  • Hail storm destroyed crops at Newdegate and Dunn Rock (Great Southern) on the 17th and 18th

Below to very-much-below average rainfall was reported in much of western and southern WA, including the western Gascoyne, SWLD and southern Goldfields. Above to very much above average rainfall was reported in a broad area from the northwest to central WA, though October is traditionally dry in these regions. For WA as a whole, October 2015  was near average, however, it ranked as the tenth driest October on record for the SWLD.

Mean maximum temperatures in October 2015 were above to very much above average across most of WA. Many sites in the Pilbara, SWLD, southern Goldfields, Southern Interior and Eucla experienced their warmest October on record, including sites with over 100 year of records. For WA as a whole, the mean maximum temperature was 3.7 °C above the long-term average for October, and ranked as the warmest October daytime temperatures since comparable records commenced in 1910. The mean maximum temperature anomaly in October 2015 is also the highest anomaly on record for any month of the year in WA, overtaking the previous record of 3.14 °C set in February 2007. When averaged across the SWLD, October 2015 was also the warmest October on record, and the highest mean maximum temperature anomaly for any month of the year on record.

At the start of October, a ridge of high pressure tracked into the Great Australian Bight with winds turning northerly directing a very warm air mass into southern WA. The warm air saw some earlyseason high daily maximum temperatures (see Special Climate Statement 52 for more details). An exceptionally hot day with daily maxima in the mid- to high thirties was experienced in southeastern SWLD on the 22nd, ahead of a trough moving through the region, with record high temperature in October reported at a number of sites. Hot days with temperatures over 40 °C were frequent in the northwest, particularly during the second half of October. Marble Bar recorded 24 consecutive days (8th-31st) with temperature at or above 40 °C, which is the longest run of consecutive 40 °C days in October on record. The previous record was 19 consecutive days on three occasions (6-24 October 2004, 13-31 October 2002, 13-31 October 1991). The total number of 40 °C days at Marble Bar was 28 days, which is also an October record, exceeding its previous record of 25 days set in October 1991. Port Hedland Airport recorded the highest temperature of the month in WA with 44.6 °C on the 25th, and 15 days in total with temperatures over 40 °C, overtaking the previous record of 14 such days in October 2002.

Mean minimum temperatures in October 2015 were above to very much above average for most of WA, apart from the northeast WA, which saw near average mean minimum temperatures. Many sites had their highest October mean minimum temperature on record, including the southwest capes with over 100 years of records. When averaged across the State, the mean minimum temperature in October 2015 was the highest in October on record. When averaged across the SWLD, it was the second warmest October nights on record, and the warmest for 101 years, since 1914, when the record high mean minimum temperature was recorded.

Sub-zero temperatures were reported through the inland SWLD on the 6th and 7th, and Wandering recorded the lowest temperature of the month in the State with a −2.0 °C on the 6th. Warm nights with overnight temperatures in the mid- to high twenties were observed in the northern and central WA, mostly in the second half of October. Wittenoom recorded the highest overnight temperature of the month in WA of 29.3 °C on the 25th.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Monday 2 November 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site (which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at Perth Regional Office (009034), which ran from 1876 to early 1992.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
