Monday, 3 September 2018 - Seasonal Climate Summary for Queensland - Product code IDCKGC24R0
Queensland in winter 2018: Dry end to winter, very warm days
Rainfall was below to well below average across much of Queensland, except the northwest. Daytime temperatures were much warmer than usual. Nights were cooler than average across southern and central parts.
Dry across most of Queensland
- Rainfall was below average across large parts of western, central and east coast Queensland
- Above average rainfall in the northwest; near-average in parts of the northern and southern interiors
- June saw very little rain falling in the first half of the month; shower and storm activity was isolated to the northwest and southeast in the second half of June
- Low pressure troughs and onshore flow produced moderate falls in eastern and southeastern parts in the first half of July, with little to no rain falling for the rest of the month
- August saw little to no rainfall until the end of the month, when an upper-level and surface trough combination brought widespread moderate falls to southeastern Queensland
Warm and sunny days
- Warm days across most of the State and the fifth-warmest winter on record in terms of mean maximum temperature; some locations had their highest winter mean daily maximum temperature on record or in several decades
- June experienced warm days in southern and southeastern districts, and cool nights in northern and eastern parts of the State
- Similarly, daytime temperatures were warmer than usual in July and record warm in the southeast and central coast
- August daytime temperatures were warmer than average for much of the State and record warm in some areas
Cold nights with inland frosts
- Cooler than usual nights in southern and central Queensland; widespread frosts were experienced throughout winter, particularly across western districts, and the central and southern interior
- In June, there were cooler than usual nights in northern and eastern parts of the State; cold nights associated with a southerly burst in mid-June resulted in Charters Towers reporting it coldest winter night on record
- July saw overnight temperatures slightly warmer than average overall, despite some frosty nights occurring
- Overnight temperatures were much cooler than usual in central and southern Queensland in August, but some individual warm nights resulted in a couple of locations reporting their warmest winter night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record

Notes
The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Monday 3 September 2018. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on
observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from
site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they
cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the
climate record for the site,
based on the decile
ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in
decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very
high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time
as a
percentage
of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
