Thursday, 1 September 2016 - Seasonal Climate Summary for Tasmania - Product code IDCKGC27R0
Tasmania in winter 2016: a wet, windy and mild season
Winter was generally wet, mild and windy in Tasmania, with June and July especially wet. Exceptionally heavy rain in June caused flooding and broke numerous rainfall records.
A wet winter
- Winter rainfall was above average across Tasmania, with the total across the State 46% above average
- June and July were wet, but August rainfall was close to average in the west and below average in the east
- Exceptionally heavy rain early in June meant dozens of sites in the north and east had their highest winter daily rainfall on record and some had their highest total winter rainfall on record (more details in the Special Climate Statement Extensive early June rainfall affecting the Australian east coast)
- The four months from May to August 2016 were Tasmania's wettest four-month period on record at 60% above average
A mild winter
- Temperatures were above average overall across the State, with the mean minimum temperature the fourth-warmest winter on record
- At the same time as the heavy rain in early June, many sites in the east had their warmest winter night on record
- June and July were generally mild, but August temperatures were close to average for most of the State
Strong winds and snow
- Strong and gusty westerly winds were prevalent with damaging gusts well in excess of 100 km/h recorded on several days, especially in June and July
- Cold outbreaks brought snow to low levels on a few occasions, most notably during July
A mild, wet winter in Hobart
- Daytime and overnight temperatures were over one degree warmer than the winter long-term average in Hobart, with June and July especially mild
- Hobart's winter rainfall of 210 mm was above the long-term average of 160 mm, but only 16 mm of this fell in August
- There were four winter days with gusts over 100 km/h at the observing site in Battery Point, all of them during July

Notes
The Seasonal climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Thursday 1 September 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
