Victoria in autumn 2016: warmest on record
Victoria had its warmest autumn on record, with warm to mild temperatures lasting well into May. Rainfall totals for autumn were near average across the State after useful rain in May made up for a drier than normal April.
- Victoria's warmest autumn on record
- Warmest days on record
- Late-season warmth extended into May
- Near-average rainfall for the State
- Numerous days with maximum wind gusts over 100 km/h along the coast and Victorian Alps
Autumn temperatures in Victoria were much warmer than average. Large numbers of sites recorded their highest autumn mean temperature on record, highest autumn mean daily maximum temperature on record, and highest autumn mean daily minimum temperature on record. During the first two weeks of March, many sites recorded their highest autumn temperature on record and warmest autumn night on record.
Victoria's overall mean temperature for autumn was the highest on record (1.88 °C above average; the previous record was 1.49 °C above average in 2007), with all areas of the State recording above average mean temperatures. Average maximum temperatures for Victoria were also highest on record at 1.84 °C above average (the previous record was +1.55 °C in 2005). Highest on record maximum temperatures were observed in the North Mallee, parts of the Wimmera and central districts, and most of Gippsland. Most of the rest of the State recorded very much above average maximum temperatures, with only the far southwest of the State within 1 °C of average.
Average minimum temperatures for Victoria were second-warmest on record, at 1.91 °C above average (the biggest difference from average since +1.98 °C in 1974). Highest on record minimum temperatures were observed in many parts of Victoria's south, while the rest of the State had very much above average night time temperatures.
More details about the autumn warmth around Australia can be found in Special Climate Statement 56: Australia's warmest autumn on record.
Autumn rainfall in Victoria was close to average. Most of the State recorded close to average rainfall for autumn, but there were isolated patches of below average rainfall in southern and eastern districts, and patches of above average rainfall in northern and western districts. Mount Hotham had a very wet season, recording both its highest autumn daily rainfall on record on 10 May and its highest total autumn rainfall on record. The season began with close to average rainfall in March, but most areas had below average rainfall in April. May brought useful rains to large parts of the west and north of the State, including areas that had missed out in March. Victorian rainfall was 6% below average, continuing a run of five consecutive seasons of drier than average conditions in the State (only three of the past 14 seasons have recorded above average rainfall in Victoria).
Victoria's strongest recorded wind gust in autumn was 165 km/h at Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse on 18 March, but a series of windy days in mid-May saw maximum wind gusts over 100 km/h recorded for several days in a row at coastal and alpine locations.

Notes
The Seasonal climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Wednesday 1 June 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
