Rainfall Update

Tropical cyclone Koji impacted the Queensland's north-east coast

  • Tropical cyclone Koji weakened from a Category 2 system off the coast and crossed the north Queensland coast on 11 January as a Category 1 system before rapidly weakening. The system brought widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across much of eastern Queensland, causing minor to major flooding to already saturated coastal areas.
  • Weekly rainfall totals of 25 to 300 mm, and locally higher totals, were recorded across large parts of eastern Queensland.
  • Showers, thunderstorms and rain with locally heavy falls to parts of the tropical north during the week with a monsoon trough and low pressure areas.
  • Weekly rainfall totals of 50 to 300 mm were recorded across much of tropical Queensland and parts of the Top End of the Northern Territory and northern parts of Western Australia.
  • Low pressure troughs, with warm and humid conditions, triggered thunderstorms, some severe, and showers in eastern parts of New South Wales and southern and south-eastern Queensland.
  • Weekly rainfall totals of 15 to 50 mm were recorded across eastern parts of New South Wales and south-eastern Queensland.
  • Cold fronts and associated troughs brought scattered showers and thunderstorms across parts of the south-east during the week.
  • Weekly rainfall totals of 15 to 50 mm were recorded across much of western Tasmania.
  • The highest weekly total (at a Bureau gauge) was 395.0 mm at Mt Jukes in Queensland, which included the highest daily total of 251.0 mm in the 24 hours to 9 am on 12 January.
