The Bureau of Meteorology will deliver improved access to flood data, committing to a 5-minute data feed option for users of legacy Enviromon software.
While free, regularly updated flood data is available to all customers and the community via the Bureau’s website, this new, more frequent product option comes as the Bureau retires external support for its legacy Enviromon software application.
The 5-minute data feed of rain and river level observations will be available through the Bureau’s Flood Data Service registered users portal from October 2026, supporting situational awareness for critical users.
The change is part of a major uplift to the Bureau's flood warning and forecasting capabilities, which includes moving from Enviromon to a modern and secure software solution for collecting, displaying and analysing data from rainfall and river level gauges in real time.
The Bureau has been engaging with existing Enviromon users, including local governments, over several years to understand needs, identify solutions and provide support throughout the transition.
Bureau CEO and Director of Meteorology, Dr Stuart Minchin, said: "We have been working closely with councils to explore a range of low-cost options for providing access to flood data”.
“While many users have followed the BOM in upgrading their own software, the commitment to deliver a faster 5-minute service for registered users provides a further alternative for those who have not made the transition,” Dr Minchin said.
“The new 5-minute data feed will be available for free for those users already registered with the Bureau’s flood data service,” he said.
Bureau representatives met with Enviromon users on Thursday 26 February to discuss the finer details of the service.
Councils and other Enviromon users have a range of options for sharing and viewing flood warning data, by which they can meet their specific requirements
- Become a registered user of the Bureau’s data transfer service. This currently provides a 15-minute data feed of rain and river level observations and from October 2026 a 5-minute data feed.
- Purchase their own software.
- Use the Bureau’s public website for free (to visualise and monitor flood data).
- Source their own ongoing software support, further develop or update Enviromon according to their needs. Enviromon will not be disabled and will continue to be available free of charge.
Further information on Enviromon:
Enviromon is software that collects, displays and analyses data from rainfall and river level gauges for flood forecasting, notifications of equipment outages and decision-making.
As Enviromon -a legacy flood data system developed by the Bureau in 1996 - no longer meets basic cybersecurity, stability and resilience standards, the Bureau has replaced its use of Enviromon with a new, cybersecure commercial software application.
