Changes to the standard rain view
Visitors to the Bureau of Meteorology website will now see a familiar rain display as standard when using the new rain radar and weather map.
In response to community feedback, we have changed the map to show rain reflectivity (dBZ) as the standard setting. This brings back a visual style that many customers say they found intuitive and reliable for interpreting weather conditions.
The rain reflectivity setting shows extreme rainfall and potential hail as very dark red or black.
Before this change, the standard view on the new weather map showed rain rate in millimetres per hour (mm/h). This was consistent with what you still see on the BOM Weather app.
Choose your rain display
If you prefer to see rain as mm/h on this website, you can change your map settings:
- On the weather map, select More weather. This opens the map settings.
- On the map settings Past tab, in the Rain and tropical cyclone section, select Rain rate (mm/h).
You can change this and other settings on the map whenever you want.
Latest forecasts and warnings
