Western Australia's fire weather districts have changed

The Western Australia Department of Fire and Emergency Services has updated the boundaries and names of some of the state's fire weather districts
Issued: 19 August 2026

What's changing?

From 19 August 2026 some fire weather district boundaries in parts of Western Australia have changed. Some locations are now in different fire weather districts. Some fire weather districts have new names.

These changes were made by the Western Australia Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES), which is responsible for setting fire weather district boundaries and names in Western Australia.

The updates better align fire weather districts with local government areas and with current fire management needs, including fuel and vegetation types, geographic features and transport routes.

Bureau fire weather information aligns with the changes

The bureau now uses the new fire weather districts in our fire weather information. You may notice the changes to fire weather district boundaries and names in some fire weather forecasts for Western Australia.

We've also updated the fire weather districts in the fire danger ratings that we publish on our website and BOM Weather app. You'll see these on our Western Australia weather forecast page.

The bureau's weather forecast and warning services have not changed.

Working together

The bureau works with fire agencies in each state and territory. Together we use the Australian Fire Danger Rating System to provide information to emergency services and the community.

The bureau issues fire weather forecasts for each fire weather district and provides these forecasts to fire agencies. DFES sets the fire danger ratings for each fire weather district in Western Australia using the forecasts we provide.

The bureau publishes the fire danger ratings for the public on our website and the BOM Weather app.
