Hello with your national weather forecast video as we take a look at what we’re expecting for tomorrow, Saturday the 6th of December, and then a quick look at Sunday as well.

There is quite a bit happening across the east of the country with several surface troughs and a cold front moving through, creating a strong contrast in conditions between New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. Ahead of these systems, very hot north-westerly winds are pushing down the coast, driving dangerous fire weather and thunderstorms. Behind the systems, cooler south-westerly winds will bring showers and isolated thunderstorms across the south-east, and it will even be cold enough for snow across parts of Tasmania on Saturday evening. Western Australia remains calm under a high pressure system, with easterly winds pushing to the west coast and temperatures rising again. Northern Australia remains in a monsoon break with isolated showers possible across far north Queensland, the Top End and the Kimberley, while the rest of the country stays dry and heats up across central and northern inland regions.

Queensland will be dry and mostly settled, though very hot in the west, reaching 45°C in Birdsville and the high 30s to low 40s across inland areas. Coastal areas will be milder in the low 30s. An afternoon shower or thunderstorm is possible in far northern Cape York. Brisbane will be sunny with a top of 30°C, and Cairns partly cloudy with 32°C.

In New South Wales and the ACT, the focus is on the heat, with severe to extreme heatwave conditions along the east coast. Daytime temperatures may reach 15 degrees above average, climbing into the high 30s and low 40s, with very hot winds producing extreme fire danger, including for Sydney, the Hunter and Illawarra. Sydney can expect 37°C. Afternoon thunderstorms will develop across much of the state, especially central and eastern areas, bringing a risk of dry lightning capable of sparking fires. Some storms may also produce gusty winds in the south-east and along the Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers. A cool change will reach the south coast in the evening, arriving near Batemans Bay by midnight, but Sydney must wait until Sunday morning for relief.

Victoria will see isolated morning showers becoming more widespread through the day, with thunderstorms possible statewide. A cold front will move through later, strengthening westerly winds and pushing showers into Gippsland, where gusty thunderstorms are also possible. Melbourne will have showers with a top of 23°C, while Mildura stays dry and warm at 29°C.

Tasmania will experience several cold fronts through the day, bringing showers to the west with the chance of a thunderstorm. Showers will spread statewide through the afternoon and evening, with 15–30 mm possible on the west coast and 2–10 mm elsewhere. By evening, temperatures will fall and snow is possible above 1000 m, dropping to 800 m by Sunday morning. Hobart will reach 20°C with showers developing later, and Launceston also 20°C.

South Australia will see a few light morning showers contracting through the afternoon, with some sunny breaks but coastal cloud lingering. South-westerly winds will strengthen in the south-east later. Temperatures will be cooler in the south, but extremely hot in the north, reaching 45°C near the Queensland border.

Western Australia may see some morning coastal cloud that clears as the day progresses. It will be sunny through the Wheatbelt, south-west and Perth, where the top will be 27°C. The west coast will warm further, with low 30s rising to around 40°C in the Pilbara.

Northern Australia remains very hot across the interior with low to mid-40s, especially through the Kimberley where extreme heatwave conditions continue. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are possible across the Top End and northern Kimberley. Darwin may see an afternoon storm with a top of 34°C.

Looking to Sunday, the cool change will move up the New South Wales coast in the morning. Severe thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon across north-east New South Wales and south-east Queensland. Sydney will be much cooler at 26°C, with Canberra at 28°C. Brisbane will see showers, storms and a top of 32°C. Adelaide, Melbourne and Hobart will be cooler than average, while Perth stays warm at 27°C and northern Australia remains hot and somewhat unsettled.
