G’day from the Bureau with your National Weather Forecast around the country for Wednesday, the 25th of February.

There is a lot of tropical moisture right across much of northern, inland and south-eastern Australia on Wednesday. That is all thanks to a tropical low that is hardly moving across central parts of the country.

It is bringing widespread rain and storms to the tropical north, the interior, western Queensland and New South Wales, and some of that moisture is extending into Victoria as well.

Further south, high pressure is dominating the weather through Tasmania, South Australia and also Western Australia, where we see a heat trough deepening. That is going to bring some hot temperatures and elevated fire dangers through parts of Western Australia.

Let us look at that in more detail.

In Queensland we can see widespread showers, rain and thunderstorms through much of western and south-western Queensland. That is where we are likely to see severe thunderstorms with heavy rainfall.

We could see isolated coastal showers along parts of the coast, with rain and thunderstorms also likely across the tropical north of Queensland.

South-eastern parts of the state will be mainly fine, warm and partly cloudy. Temperatures into the low thirties in the south-east and into the mid thirties through inland areas, moderated by the rain and storm activity.

Brisbane looking at a partly cloudy day and 30 °C.

A similar story in New South Wales, with widespread rain and thunderstorms through western and north-western parts of the state on Wednesday.

We have a trough and weak front moving through southern parts, bringing showers and thunderstorms to south-eastern and eastern New South Wales, while more heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely through the western areas.

Northern and north-eastern parts of New South Wales should stay fairly dry, and coastal parts, particularly around the Central Coast, may not see shower and storm activity until later in the day.

Sydney warm and humid, 29 °C with an afternoon shower and possible storm.

Canberra 29 °C with showers and thunderstorms.

In Victoria, not as active as Tuesday, but rain and storms are expected through eastern and northern parts of the state early on. That will clear as we move into the afternoon and evening.

A warm and humid day through northern and eastern parts of the state. Cooler and more mild through southern parts thanks to southerly winds.

Melbourne looking at a cloudy 21 °C.

Under high pressure in Tasmania, we will see temperatures in the high teens to low twenties for much of the state, with a fair bit of cloud through southern and western parts.

There will be sunny periods in northern areas, allowing temperatures to rise into the low twenties.

Hobart looking at 18 °C and cloudy skies.

In South Australia, widespread rain and thunderstorms are expected through eastern and north-eastern parts of the state.

Severe Weather Warnings are current for heavy rainfall, severe thunderstorms and flash and riverine flooding across the desert areas.

Further south it will be warm and windy with gusty east to south-easterly winds. We could see some strong and gusty gully winds, particularly for elevated parts of the Adelaide Hills, especially during the morning and afternoon hours.

Adelaide looking at a sunny 30 °C, but cooler for some coastal areas, with Mount Gambier down to 23 °C.

In Western Australia, the heat trough will bring very hot temperatures to much of inland areas. Even Perth will see some of that heat, reaching 36 °C.

It will be a bit cooler along coastal parts with gusty onshore winds, but temperatures in the mid to high thirties are expected for inland and northern areas.

We could see High to Extreme Fire Danger through parts of western and south-western Western Australia as well.

Perth 36 °C and sunny skies. A few showers and thunderstorms are possible across northern parts of the state.

In the Northern Territory, the tropical low continues to linger and will remain in place on Wednesday.

Widespread rain and thunderstorms are expected through much of the Territory, particularly through northern and eastern areas. That will bring more heavy rain, severe thunderstorms and further flash and riverine flooding.

Alice Springs could see more rain and storms, reaching 26 °C with cooler conditions under cloud. It will be warmer away from the low around Uluru.

Further north, warm to hot, humid and stormy conditions across the Top End and the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Darwin looking at showers and thunderstorms and 32 °C.
