Hello from the Bureau of Meteorology, I am Angus. Today is Monday the 12th of October. Let's talk about the weather on Tuesday. Plenty to talk about as well.

There's an active band of rain and thunderstorms, which extends all the way from the centre of the country, around Alice Springs, out towards the east coast. That is likely to impact Sydney and Brisbane during Tuesday, as well as lots of places in between through this area.

At the same time that that is going on, we've also got a powerful cold change across Tasmania, causing the temperatures to really plunge down there. And even though we've got this high in the Bight, which is keeping conditions pretty steady and settled across South Australia and Western Australia, still a number of things to talk about.

Starting off in Queensland, we can see this broad swathe of moisture that will bring showers and storms really all the way from Mount Isa in the north-west down to Surfers Paradise in the south-east.

With wet conditions forecast across much of the outback down through the Maranoa, Warrego, Darling Downs and the south-east coast, the chance of thunderstorms really ramps up into the afternoon. For most places the storms may not be severe, but they can still bring some punchy weather with locally heavy rainfall, maybe a little bit of hail and maybe some strong winds.

But there is a chance those storms ramp up to the next level and become severe thunderstorms down around the far south-east coast, especially around the Coolangatta Gold Coast area. Elsewhere across the state from Bundaberg northwards, we could see a couple of coastal showers, but no risk of storms across most of this coastline here.

Down to New South Wales, we've seen the temperatures and the weather conditions flip almost a complete 180 from what it's like on Monday. Very hot, sunny, dry day on Monday, much cooler, much cloudier and most importantly, much wetter on Tuesday for eastern parts of the state.

In fact, we see persistent showers across the east coast from Wollongong right up to the Queensland border. Some areas could see 20 to 40 mm of rain, and we might even see a touch more than that for parts of the Hunter and the mid-north coast, where 50 mm or higher not out of the question.

There's also a risk of some thunderstorms through Newcastle, the mid-north coast and the Northern Rivers areas, so the likes of Coffs Harbour could be in line for some active weather when those afternoon storms ramp up.

Sydney high of 21 °C. Frequent showers there. Canberra just a couple of showers, high of 21 °C also. Out over the west of the state morning shower or storm possible clearing for the second half of the day.

A cool day expected across Victoria with south-westerly winds across the state. There will be a little bit of rain through the morning or early afternoon across our southern districts from Warrnambool and Portland, across to Geelong, Melbourne and then out through Gippsland as well.

But rainfall totals just of 1 to 3 mm expected and clearing up through the afternoon as well. So the northern half of the state is dry. But across the entirety of Victoria, temperatures are fairly mild below average for the time of year.

It's actually a surprisingly powerful cold change that crosses Tasmania on Tuesday morning. The winds are really going to whip up through the morning hours. In fact, we might even see a Damaging Wind Warning through some southern parts of the state through the morning and early afternoon. There will be some rain as well.

Most of the rain will be on the western-facing coastline, but a little bit of rain through the morning or afternoon around Launceston and the north coast, as well as Hobart and the east coast, could even see some hail because those temperatures are really coming down. It's a chilly, wintry feeling day.

Anyone at elevation be aware we could see some snow showers that might come down to about 400 m above sea level, so some fairly low snow in the mix as well. The worst of the conditions will be around the middle of the day. Things will start to clear up throughout the afternoon and evening.

It's a high pressure day for South Australia, so what that means is fairly settled weather for most areas. It will be cloudy and it will be a little bit cool, but aside from that, it's calm, it's settled, and it's dry across our southern districts, from Mount Gambier up to Murray Bridge, across to Adelaide, across the peninsulas and out towards Ceduna.

There's a chance of a shower or even some thunderstorms up in the very far north of the state, especially in the morning.

And compared to the east coast, the west coast is seeing a much more relaxed day of weather on Tuesday. Mostly calm, clear, sunny conditions expected throughout Western Australia.

A little bit of cloud down here on the south coast, but that shouldn't really bring any rainfall. Temperatures will start to climb and the wind will pick up a little bit too. So a bit of a blustery afternoon around Perth. We're heading for 28 °C there. Same thing around Northam. Geraldton a little warmer, 32 °C.

Also seeing those gusty easterly winds. Up around the north-west we could see a touch of cloud but it should stay dry. And finally to northern Australia.

Actually quite a bit of rain around this area. Potential for some rain and storms around Alice Springs on Tuesday with damaging wind and large hail not out of the question. And broadly speaking, scattered showers and storms through almost all areas south of Katherine.

Now, not everyone will see any wet weather tomorrow, but it will be scattered right across the southern territory. Into the far north we could see a couple of showers around coastal parts of the Top End. Probably no storms up here if you're in Darwin. Definitely could see an afternoon shower.

Also, keep your eyes peeled for Hector the convector over the Tiwi Islands should really be ramping up at this time of year. Dry conditions are forecast across northern Western Australia.

And that's the wrap for Tuesday. I know there's a lot in there, so if you want to unpack it a bit more for your local area, you can find your forecast on the bureau's website or the BOM weather app. Thank you so much for watching. We'll see you tomorrow.
