Hello and welcome to your National Weather Forecast.
As we take a look at what we’re expecting for tomorrow, Saturday the 14th of February, and then a quick look ahead to Sunday as well:
We are expecting widespread rain and thunderstorms across Queensland, being drawn in by a surface trough across western parts of the state. Flooding is possible in some areas, and we do have a dedicated severe weather update video, especially if you are in the south-east of the state.
We could see some afternoon thunderstorms spill down into northern inland parts of New South Wales. Away from the showers and storms, it will be a dry and settled day across south-eastern parts of Australia. This is due to a very slow-moving high-pressure system settling over Tasmania, bringing a run of mild and sunny days. Mild conditions will extend all the way into southern parts of Western Australia.
However, we will see a few showers push onto the far south-west as a trough moves onshore. Across northern Australia, widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected once again, with heavy falls possible in the Kimberley and parts of the Northern Territory.
In Queensland, the focus will be across south-eastern, eastern and central parts of the state. Pretty much anywhere east of the surface trough will see widespread showers and thunderstorms. Flooding is possible in some areas, including riverine and flash flooding, as days of rain have already saturated catchments. Be sure to check the latest information before heading out.
By night, rain will gradually ease across the south-east, but widespread rain and thunderstorms will continue across the rest of the state into the evening. It will be quite a cool day beneath the cloud cover, with temperatures well below average. Brisbane can expect a cool 24 degrees with rain easing into the night. Cairns may see a shower or two with a top of 33 degrees.
In New South Wales, rain is expected across the north-east of the state, with possible moderate to heavy falls from Tweed Heads to the Border Ranges. Showers will extend down the coast, including Newcastle, Sydney and as far south as Wollongong. Afternoon thunderstorms are possible in the north-west, while many inland areas will see lighter easterly winds and clearer conditions, stretching from the ACT through the Riverina to Broken Hill. Sydney can expect a cloudy day with light showers and around 26 degrees.
The ACT will be dry and partly cloudy, with Canberra reaching 25 degrees.
Victoria will see patchy morning fog and cloud in the south, clearing to a mostly sunny day across the state. Light east to south-easterly winds will lift temperatures compared to recent days, with even warmer conditions on Sunday. Melbourne can expect some morning cloud before a mostly sunny 24-degree afternoon. It will be warmer north of the divide, reaching 34 degrees in Mildura.
Tasmania will start cloudy, with cloud gradually clearing from the west and south, though lingering along the east coast. A very light shower is possible between St Helens and Port Arthur. Otherwise, it will be a dry day with light winds. Hobart can expect partly cloudy conditions and 22 degrees, while Launceston reaches 24 degrees.
In South Australia, there will be some cloud and very patchy showers about the Eyre Peninsula in the morning, clearing to a mostly sunny day with some high cloud. East to south-easterly winds will see temperatures rising, except along the coast where they will remain in the mid to high 20s. Inland areas will see temperatures in the 30s, with a few afternoon showers and thunderstorms possible in the far north-east. Adelaide will reach 33 degrees, with even warmer conditions expected on Sunday as northerly winds strengthen.
Western Australia will see some cloud and very isolated showers along the south coast east of Esperance in the morning. The rest of the state will start sunny before a trough moves over the coast late in the afternoon. Showers will develop around the capes, moving eastwards towards Albany by midnight, with some gusty winds. Perth will have a hot start at 35 degrees before cooler south-westerly winds move in during the evening. Conditions will remain unsettled across the Pilbara and interior.
In the Northern Territory, rain and storms will gradually clear from the interior, bringing a dry day for Alice Springs with a top of 30 degrees. Heavy showers and storms are possible in the Kimberley, Gregory and Tanami districts, which could lead to flash flooding. Darwin will see showers and storms and a slightly cooler day with 30 degrees.
Looking ahead to Sunday, rain will continue across parts of New South Wales and Queensland, with a much cooler day along the east coast — around 23 degrees in Brisbane and 26 in Sydney. With northerly winds developing, temperatures will climb further in Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart. Perth will be cooler at 26 degrees, while broad areas of showers and thunderstorms continue across the tropical north.
