Severe thunderstorms possible for South Australia and western Victoria on Tuesday, October 20th.

G'day, David from the bureau here to take a look at the weather around the country for tomorrow, and let's have a look at the national map to start with. Here's this blocking high. It's barely been moving the last few days, bringing that cool, showery weather through the Queensland and northern New South Wales coast. More of that tomorrow.

You see this trough through South Australia that's going to bring showers and storms to eastern South Australia and western Victoria, where severe storms are possible in those areas and also through Tasmania. Showers and storms there through the day on Tuesday, a ridge of high pressure extends to the west coast.

Beyond that, so dry and mild conditions for Perth and the west coast, but showers and storms kick off further north of that through northern Western Australia and up into the Northern Territory as well.

Let's go around the grounds now, starting with Queensland, where you see those relatively cool temperatures for this time of year. Brisbane 24, Gold Coast 23. High 20s through the other major towns along the east coast, and plenty of rain through central and southern inland Queensland, including around the Maranoa and Warrego district around Charleville and places like that where there's been plenty of rain in the last few days as this easterly flow has persisted into the inland trough there, so severe thunderstorms with heavy rain are possible in the afternoon for those areas, particularly around the Maranoa and Warrego district and Charleville towns like that. So flash flooding is possible with severe storms that could bring heavy rain in the afternoon there. And the rainfall totals have been really accumulating in recent days, with some places seeing 150 to 200 mm over the last 3 or 4 days, with more to come.

Moving down to New South Wales and the ACT, you see some of that rain spilling over the northern border there. Showers continue about the northern parts of the coast, particularly around the Northern Rivers, where it is quite cool. Temperatures in the low 20s. Temperatures increase as you get further south. Wagga 27, Broken Hill 29. Sydney, possible shower in 24 but a mostly dry day there. Canberra mostly sunny and 23 °C and a few showers and thunderstorms reaching into far western New South Wales as well.

In Victoria, another warm and breezy day tomorrow. Another hayfever day. Unfortunately for those who suffer from that, with temperatures in the high 20s for most towns across Victoria, we'll see those showers and thunderstorms develop in the afternoon and continuing to the evening, so severe storms are possible with heavy rain for many of these western parts, including places like Horsham, Ballarat, down towards the Surf Coast as well. Geelong and Melbourne not forecast to see severe storms at this stage, but it's always a slight risk and any thunderstorm can be dangerous, so we could see some storms through Geelong and particularly the western suburbs of Melbourne into the afternoon and the early evening. Something is also possible in the afternoon or evening through the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, although it becomes slightly less likely as you move further east.

For Tasmania, again another warm day with temperatures 8 to 10 degrees above average through the south. Hobart, a shower or two, a possible storm through the middle part of the day and top of 27 °C. Launceston less likely to see wet weather, 25 °C there, and showers and storms that track across Tasmania during the day could be quite gusty and it will be a windy day in general along the east coast and along the west coast as well, where that northerly flow strengthens during the day.

For South Australia, the main feature is that trough that we've been talking about. You can see it tracking through there. Adelaide a top of 23 °C. So the trough could move through quite early in the day. There'll be showers and thunderstorms on and ahead and even behind that trough right throughout the day. So severe storms are possible to bring heavy rain through the south-eastern districts, but also risk of damaging winds as well as heavy rain as you get further north up into the mid-north and the Flinders District as well. Temperatures get warmer as you head further north, of course up into the low 30s there and cooler further west to the west of that trough where the winds are more onshore.

For Western Australia, dry and mild conditions, generally for the southern parts of the state under the ridge of high pressure which extends right across southern WA. Perth going for a mild top of 23 °C. Partly cloudy there, much warmer inland, getting up into the low 30s and see the showers and thunderstorms kicking off. Connected to this trough through the afternoon, in the evening through the Pilbara, the inland parts and up towards the Kimberley as well and for the Northern Territory. Showers and thunderstorms possible, generally for the western half of the territory, including up around Darwin and the Tiwi, and down in the Red Centre as well. Darwin, a shower or two, maybe a thunderstorm in the early morning, most likely, and a top of 34 °C.
