Hello with your National Weather Forecast as we take a look at what we're expecting for this coming weekend. That's for Saturday, the 30th of May and a quick peek at Sunday as well.
First to the synoptic map and we can see during the morning rain and storms finally clearing off the east coast.
But another cold front will approach the south-east of the country and showers will increase for South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and inland parts of New South Wales through the day, with colder southerly winds coming up behind that system.
In Western Australia, rain and storms building along the coast.
That's ahead of a low pressure system and very strong cold front moving through that will bring widespread heavy rainfall, damaging to destructive winds and dangerous coastal conditions.
So if you are in Perth or across western and southern parts of WA this long weekend, we do have a dedicated Severe Weather Update video with more information on that.
For the rest of the country though, we do have a very dominant high pressure system that's keeping things dry across the rest of the north of the country. So now a state-by-state look, starting off with Queensland.
A little bit of morning cloud in the south-east, patchy showers about the Scenic Rim that will clear to a mostly sunny day across the south-east coast of the state.
Through the day though, cloud building along the southern border with New South Wales.
Chance of a couple of showers, mostly between Bollon and out towards Cunnamulla.
For the rest of Queensland though, we will see some cooler west to south-westerly winds, so maximum temperatures slightly below average for this time of year across inland areas, but a little bit milder and closer to average along the coast.
For Brisbane, sunny with a top of 23 °C, sunny also up in Cairns with a maximum of 27 °C. Now to New South Wales.
A little bit of morning fog and low cloud and a few light showers about the Ranges that will clear off during the morning, but then through the day cloud will build across inland parts of the state.
We will see showers developing, mostly falls of less than 2 mm, but we could see some higher isolated falls about the Riverina and over towards the South West Slopes.
And with those showers we will see cooler temperatures coming through, so snow is possible about the Snowy Mountains later at night.
For Sydney we are expecting a bit of morning cloud, but then a sunny afternoon to follow with a top of 21 °C.
For Canberra, possible morning fog and showers through the day with a top of 15 °C. Now to Victoria. Patchy morning fog and low cloud about the north-east and also through the Ranges.
We'll see a couple of showers in the south of the state and the south-west, that will build as this cold front sweeps through, and showers will extend to all districts.
Rainfall totals generally between 1 to 5 mm, but we'll see some higher falls about the south-west coast and over towards Wilsons Promontory, and it will be a little bit cooler as well into the night-time, with colder winds and the snow level falling across alpine areas.
So for Melbourne, it will start to see those showers increase from the afternoon, with a maximum of 18 °C, and for Mildura, showers, possible storms about the Mallee also with a maximum of 18 °C.
For Tasmania, patchy morning fog and cloud inland in the morning.
We’ll see showers about the west coast and also through the north as this cold front approaches, and those showers will become a little more widespread as we head into Saturday and also into Sunday.
We will see the temperatures falling though, and snow is possible above about 1200 m later in the evening.
So for Hobart, we are expecting a partly cloudy day, slight chance of a shower with a top of 17 °C. A few showers up in Launceston also with a maximum of 17 °C.
To South Australia, we'll see some showers across the southern coastline to start, that’ll extend up towards the Mid North, the Riverland and the south-east of the state through the day.
Generally rainfall totals up to about 5 mm, but we could see some higher falls about the Mount Lofty Ranges and temperatures will take a bit of a dive with those colder winds coming through behind that cold front.
But in the north of the state we are expecting mild and mostly sunny conditions.
For Adelaide, partly cloudy, showers increasing from the morning and into the afternoon with a maximum of 17 °C. Now to Western Australia.
A bit of patchy fog in the south-west to start and then rain will build across the Gascoyne down towards Geraldton and extending southwards towards Perth into the afternoon.
We will start to see some heavy falls developing in some areas and as this trough approaches, winds will really pick up.
There is a chance of seeing damaging to locally destructive winds, particularly on Saturday night.
And with the next cold front approaching and another weather system to the south, we'll see those very windy and wet conditions persisting all the way into Sunday and also Monday, right through the long weekend.
So for Perth, patchy morning fog in the morning, cloud will build and that rain will also come through with the afternoon with a chance of damaging to destructive winds, especially as we head towards the evening time.
Across the Pilbara though, mostly dry and also sunny. High 20s to low 30s are the maximums there.
Finally, across northern Australia, very little change compared to the last few days.
We are expecting clear skies for both the Northern Territory and right across the Kimberley. For Darwin, sunny with a top of 31 °C. Sunny also in Broome with a maximum of 30 °C.
Now to Sunday, we can see this very strong cold front pushing through Western Australia with a very deep and vigorous low pressure system set to come up behind that.
And we will see another pulse of very damaging to destructive winds from Sunday night and into Monday, and that will gradually extend towards the east as well.
And we'll start to see those showers continuing across the south-east and cold temperatures as well coming to the south-eastern capitals.
Hobart, Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney looking at a cooler day, but it will be mostly dry and sunny all the way from Brisbane to Broome and right across northern Australia.
That's the forecast for today.
