Storms possible across most of Australia on Wednesday, October 21st. G'day from the bureau, David here to take a look at the weather for tomorrow. And it's a real spring-like pattern now, with showers and storms forecast across parts of all states and territories from the Kimberley and northern WA, all the way through central and eastern Australia, and down to parts of Tasmania as well. And it's a real rinse and repeat job. From what we've seen in recent days. This blocking high is still sitting there in the Tasman Sea, barely moving at all, so more of the same weather, cool and wet in the east, warmer in the south, although increasingly stormy as moisture increases there. Plenty of storms through northern and north-western Australia as well, and then a cold front just clipping the south-west coast later in the day on Wednesday.
Let's go around the grounds now, starting with Queensland, where the first thing to pick out is the south-east coast, where there could be some locally moderate to heavy rain in the early hours of Wednesday morning, with some showers coming in off the Coral Sea. So if those showers hit the same spot, maybe on the Gold Coast, maybe on the Sunshine Coast, we could see the rainfall totals accumulate really quickly in a small pocket of south-east Queensland. Later in the day on Wednesday, the focus moves to central west Queensland, where severe thunderstorms are likely with damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain, all possible through many parts of the central west in the Maranoa and Warrego district in particular, and then moving through to the Central Highlands around Emerald on Wednesday evening, so severe weather is possible across a large area of southern Queensland, as it has been for many days now, with plenty of wet weather, rivers and creeks starting to respond as well. So we have a severe weather update video which will go into more detail through these areas of Queensland. If that affects you, go check that video out.
For New South Wales and the ACT you see more of that wet weather spilling over the northern border, as it has done each day, this week so far, showers along the north coast becoming more isolated as you get further south, although still the odd shower and thunderstorm, particularly in the afternoon around the southern ranges. Maybe the ACT and around the Blue Mountains as well. Sydney a shower or two and a top of 24 °C. Canberra a top of 25 °C and partly cloudy there. Warmer conditions in the south-west and cooler in the north as it has been each day this week.
Those warmer conditions continue through Victoria. Another day in the mid to high 20s, nudging 30 °C along the Murray. Showers and thunderstorms possible across a large area of Victoria. Although many places won't see anything tomorrow, the more likely areas to get some wet weather are east of Melbourne through the Ranges and Gippsland and the La Trobe Valley on Wednesday afternoon. Melbourne itself going for partly cloudy, top of 27 °C, maybe just 1 or 2 thunderstorms around, particularly in the outer suburbs on Wednesday afternoon.
For Tasmania another warm day on the way. Hobart a shower or two and a top of 24 °C. Launceston 27 °C, showers through the west at first and then shifting mostly to the east coast in the afternoon and evening, with a possible thunderstorm out there as well. So maybe a thunderstorm for Hobart, but more likely further east of Hobart and then up the east coast with some wet weather there.
For South Australia, dry for most of the state, just the odd shower and thunderstorm around the eastern fringes of the state, and then up through the north and north-west as well. We'll see them develop over the north-west pastoral district in the afternoon. Warming up again after one cooler day on Tuesday. Adelaide cloud clearing and a top of 26 °C, mid 20s through most of the agricultural and southern pastoral districts, getting up into the 30s further north.
For Western Australia we’ll see showers and storms continue through the night around this trough system over inland WA and then kick off again in the afternoon through inland parts in particular, with severe thunderstorms possible in the very far east of Western Australia. For the South West land division, mostly dry at first. And then you see this cold front coming to frame here. So that'll bring some showers to the south-west capes later in the day and then through to Perth and the west coast, perhaps in the evening on Wednesday, after a partly cloudy top of 24 °C and then maybe some light showers in Perth.
And for the Northern Territory, lastly, we see those showers and thunderstorms spilling over from the Kimberley into the western Northern Territory on Wednesday, with again severe thunderstorms that could bring damaging winds to remote parts of the south-western territory there. Darwin may see a shower or two in the morning, but thunderstorms are likely to stay south and west of Darwin itself, so a mostly dry day with a top of 34 °C is on the way.
That's all we've got for you for now. You can always find the latest warnings and forecasts on our website, on our app and on our social media channels.
And as I mentioned, we've got a severe weather update video, which will cover multiple areas, most notably Queensland, but also other parts of southern and eastern Australia. So check that out if you live in those areas.
Thanks for watching. We'll see you next time.
