Hello, with your National Weather Forecast as we take a look at what we're expecting for tomorrow, Thursday the 20th of November. Straight to the synoptic map: Tropical Cyclone Fina has been named off the coast of the Northern Territory. On Thursday morning, it is expected to be a category two system, and throughout the day it will bring increasing wind and rain to parts of the Top End coastline. If you are in that part of the country, keep across the latest forecasts and warnings and watch our dedicated severe weather update video.
Away from the tropics, a cold front slides across south-eastern Australia. It will be another cool day for Victoria and Tasmania, with afternoon showers and thunderstorms across the eastern seaboard. In the west, showers and storms continue across southern parts of Western Australia, also pushing into western parts of South Australia. This is associated with a low-pressure system and several troughs drawing tropical moisture southward.
In Queensland, a little cloud will linger along the coast. Showers and thunderstorms continue across the far north Cape York Peninsula, and from the afternoon, showers and storms will develop through inland parts of the Darling Downs, potentially reaching into central inland areas. The focus of storms will be between Saint George and Rolleston. Western Queensland will be hot, reaching 41 °C in Longreach. Closer to the coast, Brisbane will be partly cloudy with a top of 29 °C, and Cairns partly cloudy with 32 °C.
In New South Wales, the cold front moves through the south-east during the day, bringing showers to Canberra and the ACT. In the afternoon, showers and storms will build for Sydney, the Hunter, and the Northern Tablelands. Severe thunderstorms are possible from the Central Coast to the Hunter, with damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall. Sydney will see a possible shower – more likely in the afternoon – and a cooler top of 24 °C. Canberra may see a shower or storm and reach 27 °C, while the north-west will be hot, hitting 39 °C in Bourke.
In Victoria, the cold front moves through in the morning, bringing a few showers along the southern coastline that will contract toward Gippsland and the north-eastern ranges by afternoon. It will be another cool to cold day with fresh south-westerly winds. Melbourne will be partly cloudy with a possible morning shower and a top of 16 °C. Most of the north will stay dry. Cloud will clear across the west and inland by evening, leading to another cold night on Thursday and into Friday morning.
In Tasmania, showers will affect the west and could briefly spill into other parts of the state during the afternoon before clearing in the evening. The snow level will rise from 800 m to above 1000 m by evening. Hobart will be partly cloudy with a slight chance of an afternoon or evening shower.
In South Australia, showers and storms will build from the west, reaching around Ceduna by late evening and into the midnight period. The south coast will be cloudy and quite cool, with cloud gradually breaking up through the day. Adelaide will start cloudy, with sunny breaks in the afternoon and a top of 21 °C, while the north will be hot, climbing into the high 30s.
In Western Australia, another rainy day is expected across the south, with showers and storms extending up toward Kalgoorlie before easing through the day. In the afternoon, more showers will develop north of Perth up toward Geraldton. There is also a chance of a severe thunderstorm across the northern Goldfields. It will remain cool along the south coast, unsettled further north, and hot and dry through the Pilbara.
For the Northern Territory, the focus remains on Tropical Cyclone Fina offshore. It is drawing moisture away from the western Top End, leaving Darwin with a dry and partly cloudy day and a top of 35 °C. However, showers, rain, and wind will build across the Top End later in the day. Conditions will be dry and hot further south, reaching 40 °C at Uluru, and hot as well in the Kimberley, with a chance of an isolated thunderstorm inland.
