G'day, David from the Bureau with a look ahead at a mixed bag of spring weather this week across Australia.
So far this weekend, we've seen widespread showers and storms over inland WA, continuing a pattern that lasted most of last week and will continue this week. Rain extended across the south-east from this system yesterday, while in the tropics, moisture is increasing as the season turns.
This cold front brought showers to the New South Wales coast late Saturday, and that continues today, while skies clear up across Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia. Meanwhile another wet and stormy day in the west, with severe storms possible again around Kalgoorlie and the Wheatbelt. With 20 mm to 50 mm already in the gauges this week, further heavy rain today could cause rapid flash flooding.
On Monday, those storms shift a little further east. And over northern New South Wales and southern Queensland, showers and storms will get an extra kick from an upper trough, so the spots exposed to south-easterly winds should pick up 10 mm to 15 mm. In between, the hot September continues under this ridge.
By Tuesday that high dries things out across New South Wales, with showers shifting up the Queensland coast. The stormy area in WA moves slowly east into South Australia, and we'll continue tracking that system east in the second half of the week.
Another warm period in the south-east in northerly winds, continuing on Wednesday as moisture continues to pump in over the continent ahead of a strengthening upper trough, and showers come ashore in the south-west.
By Thursday rain should extend over much of Tasmania, Victoria and western New South Wales.
And on Friday, we could see some heavier totals about the alps as a low develops, hopefully including that really dry part of south-eastern Victoria and New South Wales. In the west, the inland showers and storms kick off again.
