Over the past 24 hours, a cold front swept across south-east Australia bringing damaging winds, rain and storms. Up to 80 mm was observed across Alpine areas. At the same time parts of eastern New South Wales saw their warmest early spring day on record. And in Western Australia, showers moved onto the west coast, A handy 25 mm was observed in Geraldton.
For the remainder of Sunday, wind and showers continue to ease across the south-east, but the heat will peak across south-east Queensland, which could impact yields of lettuce and melons, amidst ongoing dry conditions. Over in WA, a low-pressure system is forecast to deepen, generating areas of rain and thunderstorms. That includes the interior and southern cropping regions, which did benefit from excellent rain during the past week.
On Monday, a weak cold front will skim Tasmania and Victoria, with light showers. But rain remains mostly south of the Mallee, so silage and hay-making activities can continue in earnest. Rain persists in WA, with milder temperatures through there.
Into Tuesday, a ridge of high pressure builds over southern Australia, and this will push showers back onto the east coast. Unfortunately, though, none of it will make it over the Divide and into parched regions of northern New South Wales.
By mid-week, that high pressure system dominates conditions right across the country. Showers begin to ease across central Australia and cooler daytime and nighttime temperatures will extend across southern areas, but no frost is expected.
On Thursday, showers return to the tropics, including through parts of the Top End, and more broadly across northern Australia, as we approach the end of the dry season, pasture is drying out, and supplementary feeding of livestock has begun.
Finally on Friday, temperatures in WA start to rise again ahead of the next cold front, but it'll be mostly dry elsewhere away from the east coast as we head in towards next weekend.
