How to find warnings, forecasts and past weather (latest observations)

Access warning information

To access warnings and alerts, click or tap the warnings icon (yellow triangle) at the top right of your desktop, tablet or mobile screen.

On the homepage, you can also use the yellow bar that says Current warnings. To access warnings for a state or territory, use the list under the Current warnings bar.

If you've selected a favourite location as your homepage, you'll find the warnings for that place right of the location name on desktop, and below the location name on mobile.

Another way to access warnings is to use the main menu. Select Weather and climate, then Warnings and alerts.

You can view warnings on our Warnings and alerts page.

For a specific location

Search for a location by name or postcode to find forecasts and observations for that place.

On the location page, use tabs below the location name to see weather for today, days ahead or the past 72 hours.

Today

At the top of the location page is a summary of:

  • current and feels like temperature
  • forecast maximum and minimum temperatures
  • chance of any rain.

Select Show more about today to see current weather, the district forecast, and sun and UV times.

Below the summary, you'll find the hourly forecast table for that location.

Use the buttons above the table to select temperature and rain, wind, humidity, UV and cloud, or show all. Scroll using the arrows at the side of the table to see more information.

7 day forecast

The Days ahead tab at the top of the location page gives you access to forecasts for the week ahead. It shows a snapshot of each day for the week. To see more details:

  • use Expand all at the top right of the content, or
  • select the day you want to see. This opens the accordion with details. Tap or click again to close it.

Past weather – latest observations

Selecting the Past tab on the location page gives you hourly weather data for the past 72 hours at this place.

Use the buttons above the table to select the type of weather you want to see in the table.

Scroll left or right using the arrows at the side of the table to see more data.

Above the table is a summary of the day so far at that location. It shows:

  • highest and lowest recorded temperature
  • rain since midnight
  • highest wind gust.

At the top of the page, you can change the weather station that is providing the weather data. Find more details about the weather station, and other nearby stations at the bottom of the page.

In this video, we'll show you how to find warnings, forecasts and past weather observations.

To find weather for a location, open search by selecting the magnifying glass on any page and type the place name or postcode. Select the place you're interested in from the search results to see forecasts and observations for that place.

Don't forget to favourite the page if it's one you visit often.

On the location page, use the tabs below the location name to see weather for today, days ahead or the past 72 hours.

Select Today to see the current recorded temperature. Beneath that, you'll see the current feels like temperature, which factors in windchill and humidity.

In this example you see 23.3 is the current temperature, 20.7 is the feels like temperature, 29 is today's max forecast temperature, and 19 is the forecast overnight temperature. This is a forecast summary in a few words and there is 0 to 2 mm of rain forecast today with a 25% chance of at least 2 mm.

Select 'show more about today' to see current weather observations like wind speed and rain since midnight. There are also district and coastal forecasts, fire danger, tides, sun, and UV information.

Below you'll find the hourly forecast table for that location. Use the selection boxes to filter by wind, humidity, temperature, and rain. Select the 'Days ahead' tab to see the forecast for today and the week ahead. It shows a snapshot of each day. Click the arrow to expand and see it in more detail.

Select the 'Past' tab on the location page for recorded hourly observations for the past 72 hours from the most appropriate BOM weather station. You can change the weather station by selecting 'change station'.

To access warnings and alerts from any page, click or tap the yellow triangle icon at the top right of your screen.

On a location page, you'll find any warnings for that place below the location name.

For state, territory, district or region

You can find your state, territory or district through search. You can also access state, territory, district or region weather information from:

  • the Forecasts and observations page
  • locations pages. Select the links above the location name ('breadcrumbs') to go to the district, region, state or territory page.

The state, territory, district and region pages have tabs for:

  • forecasts
  • observations
  • places.

Use Places to access locations within that state, territory, district or region.

Weather stations in your district

To see latest observations from weather stations in your district, view the Observations tab on the state or territory page:

Find regional weather information in the weather and climate menu under forecasts and observations. Here, information is presented across 3 tabs. You'll find the major cities and links to state and territory weather info below.

You can also search for a district, state or territory using the magnifying glass on any page and choosing the place you want from the results. You can use breadcrumbs to navigate between state, district and location pages.

The forecast tab displays the 4-day forecast and the weather map. On state and territory pages, this is where you'll find fire danger ratings across the state.

On the observations tab, you'll find a snapshot of the region's weather so far, highest and lowest observed temps, rainfall and wind gusts, and where they were recorded. Scroll down to see the latest weather observations by district.

On the places tab, you'll find today's weather by district. Click the arrow to expand the forecast on each place.
