New South Wales in January 2021: relatively cool and wet

New South Wales in January was cooler and wetter than in recent years. Nights were the coolest since 2002, although they were 0.23 °C above the historical average for the state as a whole. Moist air from the tropics meant that January rainfall was the highest since 2016.

Widespread rain

  • Rainfall in January was average to above average across much of the state, and very much above average for the Riverina.
  • For the state as a whole it was the wettest January since 2016, although it was around 4% below the historical (1961–1990) average.
  • At the start of the month moist tropical air combined with a low pressure trough to bring widespread rain to inland areas.
  • A coastal trough brought moderate falls to the north-east coastal area on the 7th and 8th.
  • A surface trough in a cold front brought widespread falls to the far west and south-west on the 26th.
  • At the end of the month, moist air drawn down from the tropics combined with a low pressure trough to bring widespread heavy rain to the Riverina and the south-east of the state.
  • Some sites in the south-east had their highest January daily rainfall on record on the 29th or 30th.
  • Some sites had their highest total January rainfall on record or their highest total for at least 20 years.

Relatively cool conditions

  • January temperatures were cooler than in recent years, and generally within 1 °C of the historical (1961–1990) average.
  • The January mean temperature and mean maximum temperatures were 0.25 °C and 0.27 °C respectively above the historical average, the coolest since 2015.
  • Several sites near the coast had their coldest January day on record in the first week of the month.
  • The January mean minimum temperatures was 0.23 °C above the historical average, the coolest since 2002.
  • Some sites had their lowest January mean daily minimum temperature since 2000.

Severe heatwave late in the month

  • A stationary high pressure system in the Tasman Sea combined with an inland trough brought very hot air over much of the state from the 22nd to the 26th.
  • Daytime temperatures during this period were in the high 30s to low 40s, around 6 to 10 °C above the January average.
  • Heatwave conditions were severe to extreme in some regions, but no temperature records were set.
  • Sydney (Observatory Hill) recorded 5 consecutive days over 30 °C from the 22nd to the 26th; only the ninth such instance since records at Observatory Hill began in 1859, but the third year in a row that this has occurred.
  • At the same time as the land heatwave, exceptionally warm waters were reported off the South Coast, and Moruya Heads Pilot Station (an exposed coastal site) recorded its warmest January night in 111 years of records on the 25th.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Monday 1 February 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
