Queensland in November 2017: wet in the northwest; cool days and nights in the east
Rainfall was mixed in November: wetter than usual in the northwest, but dry in parts of the southeastern interior. Days and nights were cooler than usual in the east of the State.
Wetter than usual in the northwest
- November rainfall was above to well above average in the northwest
- Drier than usual in parts of the southeast and central interior
- Widespread thunderstorms over southern and southeast Queensland produced moderate falls between the 6th and 8th
- A moist onshore flow generated showers in the northern tropics in the middle of the month
- Thunderstorms with moderate falls over southern parts from 14th to 19th; particularly active on the 17th
- Persistent showers in northern Queensland and Gulf Country from the 21st with some locations recording their highest total November rainfall on record or in several decades
- Thunderstorms produced heavy rainfall over southeastern parts on the 29th; Wamuran and Somerset Dam had their highest November daily rainfall on record
- Toowoomba reported its driest November in 20 years, while Nanango and Oakey had their driest November in more than 20 years
Cool days and nights in the east
- Cooler than usual daytime temperatures along much of the east coast and adjacent inland districts
- Overnight temperatures were cooler than usual along the central to southeast coasts, and the Central Highlands and Darling Downs district
- Both days and nights were warmer than usual in far northern Queensland and in the far southwest, butnear average elsewhere
- Tewantin had its coldest November
day (lowest maximum temperature) on record on the 18th, as
persistent showers kept the days cool
- A number of sites in the southeastern interior had their lowest November mean daily minimum temperature on record or in several decades
- This resulted in some locations reporting their lowest November mean temperature on record
Severe thunderstorms
- Strong winds associated with severe thunderstorms brought trees and power lines down across roads around Ravenshoe on the 1st
- Severe thunderstorms produced hail up to 4 cm in diameter around Barney on the 5th
- On the 7th, there were multiple reports of large hail at Beaudesert, Banyo, Brisbane Airport, Chermside and Melawondi
- Wind gusts associated with the severe storms uprooted trees and brought down powerlines in Bundaberg, also on the 7th
- Severe thunderstorms produced wind gusts of 109 km/h at Julia Creek on the 21st
- Heavy rainfall associated with severe thunderstorms over the southeast produced 80 mm of rainfall in one hour at Wamuran on the 29th, making it one of the sites that had their wettest November day on record in the 24 hours to 9 am on the 30th

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Friday 1 December 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
