Friday, 1 November 2019 - Monthly Climate Summary for Queensland - Product code IDCKGC14R0
Queensland in October 2019 Above average daytime temperatures and below average rain for most of the State
Rain at the end of the month saw areas of the central west report above average October rainfall, but most of the State was drier than average. Maximum temperatures were above average everywhere apart from the far northeast tropical coast. Minimum temperatures were generally above average in the far west and south and below average in the north, and close to average elsewhere.
Above average rainfall across parts of the central west
- Queensland's total rainfall for the month was just over half the average for October
- Rainfall was above average in parts of the central west and an area of the Capricornia coast
- Below average rainfall was recorded across the northern interior, central Queensland interior and parts of the southeast interior
- Thunderstorms and showers brought moderate falls to the southeast at the start of the month
- Further moderate falls were recorded between the 11th and 13th in areas from the Capricornia to southeast coasts, and again from the 18th to 20th
- Coastal showers affected parts of the east coast throughout the month, particularly the north tropical coast
- Moderate falls were recorded in central western parts of Queensland at the end of the month
- A handful of sites had their lowest total October rainfall on record
- For the year-to-date, rainfall for Queensland is above average in the northern tropics and below average in the southeastern quarter of the State, whilst areas of lowest on record persist in the southern Darling Downs
Maximum temperatures above average across most of the State
- Mean maximum temperatures were warmer than average across much of Queensland, except the far northeast tropical coast
- Mean minimum temperatures were warmer than average in the far west and south, and below average in the north
- The State's mean maximum temperature was 1.88 °C above average, the mean minimum temperature was 1.00 °C above average and the overall mean temperature 1.44 °C above average; cooler than October last year
- Hot days were experienced across southern Queensland from the 6th, due to warm and gust northwesterly winds ahead of the passage of a surface trough
- Daytime temperatures were more than 12 degrees above average over the southeast on the 7th and 8th, and resulted in elevated fire dangers from the hot, dry air and fresh winds
- Hot, dry and gusty west to northwesterly winds from the 14th saw temperatures across much of Queensland between 6 to 10 degrees above average, and peaking on the 16th, where much of southern Queensland was 8 to 12 degrees above average
- Minimum temperatures were below average across most of the State in the first half of the month, due to very little cloud cover or rainfall
- Overnight temperatures were well more than 10 degrees above average over parts of the Maranoa and Warrego, and Darling Downs districts on the 17th, with some sites reporting their warmest October night on record
- Temperatures for Queensland are more than a degree warmer than average for mean, maximum and minimum temperatures, with record warm days in the greater southeast
Bushfires
- Fires burnt west of Brisbane in Laidley and Grandchester on the 8th, with other fires also burning in eastern Queensland

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Friday 1 November 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
