Monday, 3 July 2017 - Monthly Climate Summary for Tasmania - Product code IDCKGC17R0
Tasmania in June 2017: record dry in the east, mostly warm days until the end
In common with most of southern Australia, Tasmania had much less rain than usual during June – especially on the East Coast and in the Midlands where several sites had their driest June on record. Temperatures were above average for most of the month, but cold weather became dominant in the last week and prevented many records being broken.
Record dry June in the east, near average in the western highlands
- Numerous sites, mostly on the East Coast and in the Midlands but also some in the northwest, had their lowest total June rainfall on record or their lowest total for many years
- Rainfall was well below average for most of the State, although closer to average in the western highlands
- Rainfall for the whole month was below 10 mm in large parts of the East Coast, South East and Midlands, with some sites reporting less than one millimetre, whereas Mount Read in the western highlands recorded over 340 mm of precipitation for the month
- Total rainfall for the State was just half the June average, making it the driest June since 2007
- Surface pressure was more than 5 hPa above average for June across much of southern Australia, including Tasmania
- The dominant high pressure systems reduced the number of rain-bearing low pressure systems and cold fronts, although fronts did still bring some rain to western Tasmania and a few strong fronts did affect the whole State
Mild days for much of the month, but cold toward the end
- Daytime temperatures were above the June average for most of the month, with some especially mild days from the 15th to the 20th
- Cold days became common in the final week, especially in the south
- Taken across the month, daytime temperatures were above average in all areas and well above average in the southeast half of the State, but cold weather at the end of the month meant only Bushy Park had its warmest mean June maximum temperature on record
- With light winds and clear skies there were plenty of cold nights, especially in the east and inland; mean overnight temperatures were below average in the northeast
- There were enough mild nights to keep mean minimum temperatures above average in the west: Strahan had its highest June mean daily minimum temperature in 25 years of record
- Tasmania's mean temperature was 0.47 °C above the June average, with the mean maximum temperature 0.59 °C above average and the and the State mean minimum temperature 0.35 °C above average
Mild and dry in Hobart, until the final week
- With just 6.6 mm for the whole month, well below the long term average of 54 mm, It was Hobart's equal second-driest June (behind 1.8 mm in 1979, and equalling 2006)
- There was no measurable rain until the 18th; Hobart's longest recorded winter dry spell
- Hobart's mean daily maximum temperature of 13.9 °C was equal fourth-warmest for June, just behind 1988 and 1962 (both with a mean of 14.0 °C) and 1883 (14.1 °C, although the thermometers were not in a Stevenson screen back then)
- The temperature reached 15 °C or higher in Hobart on a record thirteen days, well above the June average of just four such mild days
- Cold days and nights became common in the last third of the month, with the coldest morning the 22nd when the temperature dropped to 0.6 °C (colder than anything during 2016) and the coldest day on the 30th when the temperature struggled to reach 10.1 °C

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 3 July 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
From 2017, information about Macquarie Island can be found in the climate summary for the Remote Islands and Antarctica
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
