Monday, 3 August 2020 - Monthly Climate Summary for Tasmania - Product code IDCKGC17R0
Tasmania in July 2020: Driest for the state since 1957
Parts of the north, east and west had their driest July on record, and for Tasmania it was the second driest on record after 1957. Days were warmer than average and night-time temperatures were mostly typical for July.
Second-driest July on record
- Averaged across the state, July rainfall was 58.3% below the long-term average.
- Some sites in the north, east and west had their lowest total July rainfall on record including Launceston Airport, Devonport Airport, King Island Airport, and Cape Bruny.
- More than 50 mm of rainfall was reported across most of western Tasmania during the first week, with at least another 25 mm for the west over the third weekend, however monthly totals were generally less than 60% of average in most parts.
- Persistent high-pressure over south-east Australia diverted cold fronts further south than usual, limiting rainfall over the state.
- This month is a stark contrast to July 2019, when western Tasmania had above average rainfall, and highest on record from around Lake St Clair to Queenstown.
Warmer than average days, mixed nights
- The mean daily maximum temperature for Tasmania was around half a degree higher than usual and the mean daily minimum temperature was around half a degree cooler than usual.
- Mean daily maximum temperatures across almost the whole state were above average for July.
- The month began with warm weather, and maximum temperatures were more than 4 °C higher than average along the south-west coast.
- There was a mixture of minimum temperatures with some very cold nights and some very mild nights resulting in close to average mean daily minimum temperatures for most parts.
- kunanyi (Mount Wellington Pinnacle) had its equal highest July mean daily maximum temperature on record at 4.0 °C.
- Devonport Airport and Liawenee both had their highest July temperature on record with 17.2 °C on the 5th, and 12.2 °C on the 29th respectively.
- King Island Airport had its lowest July temperature on record with -1.2 °C on the 17th (also a new annual record), its lowest July mean daily minimum temperature on record at 5.8 °C, and its equal lowest July mean temperature for at least 20 years at 9.7 °C.
Hobart (Ellerslie Road)
- Rainfall was very low around Hobart and it was a relatively mild month with several very warm days for July and only one very cold night.
- Total rainfall for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 11.6 mm, which is 22% of the long-term average of 52.0 mm.
- The mean daily maximum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 12.5 °C, which is 0.7 °C above the long-term average of 11.8 °C.
- The warmest day was 15.6 °C on the 31st, and the coolest day was on the 10th when the temperature reached 8.6 °C.
- The mean daily minimum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 4.6 °C, equal to the long-term average.
- The coldest morning was 0.5 °C on the 8th, and the warmest morning was on the 5th when the minimum temperature was 8.7 °C.

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 3 August 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
