Monday, 2 November 2020 - Monthly Climate Summary for Tasmania - Product code IDCKGC17R0
Tasmania in October 2020: wet in the east
October rainfall was above average across most of eastern Tasmania and in the wettest 10% of records for parts of the East Coast and Southeast districts. Days were cooler than average in the east from around Scamander down to the southern coast, and nights were very much warmer than average in the north-east; temperatures where close to average elsewhere.
Wettest October since 2016
- October rainfall was 23% higher than average for Tasmania, making it the state's wettest October since 2016.
- A wet start to the month saw more than 100 mm recorded over parts of the west during the first week of October.
- Eastern Tasmania recorded most of its above-average October rainfall over three events during the first three weeks of the month.
- It was relatively dry for most areas away from the state's north and north-east during the last two weeks of October.
- Heavy rainfall on the 5th from a slow moving rainband, and again on the 9th, delivered some sites their highest October daily rainfall on record.
- Subsequently, some sites went on to have their wettest October on record.
- Other sites had their highest total October rainfall for at least 20 years.
- Year-to-date rainfall is above average in the east, below average for parts of the south and north-west, and close to average in most other areas.
Cooler days in the east, warmer nights in the north-east
- Both daytime and night-time temperatures were close to average during October for much of the state.
- Some cooler days in the east meant the mean maximum temperature for the state was 0.32 °C below average, making it the coolest October since 2016.
- The passage of a cold front on the 17th kept daily maximum temperatures more than 6 °C below average for a large part of central and eastern Tasmania.
- Warmer nights in the north-east pushed Tasmania's mean minimum temperature 0.38 °C higher than average; more than 1 °C warmer than 2019 but cooler than a very warm 2018.
- Some sites had their coldest October day on record.
Hobart (Ellerslie Road)
- Total rainfall for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 122.0 mm, which is 199% of the long-term average of 61.2 mm.
- The mean daily maximum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 16.0 °C, which is 1.0 °C below the long-term average of 17.0 °C.
- The warmest day was 20.9 °C on the 2nd, and the coolest day was on the 5th when the temperature reached 10.3 °C.
- The mean daily minimum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 8.2 °C, which is 0.4 °C above the long-term average of 7.8 °C.
- The coldest morning was 1.9 °C on the 6th, and the warmest morning was on the 3rd when the minimum temperature was 12.9 °C.

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Monday 2 November 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
