Tasmania in September 2021: mixed rainfall and close to average temperatures

September 2021 was wetter than average for parts of the Central Plateau and Upper Derwent Valley down to the South East District, but it was drier than average for much of the state's north-east. There were some higher than average maximum and minimum temperatures in the north-east and along the north coast, but most of Tasmania had fairly typical temperatures for the start of spring.

Drier than average across the north-east, wetter in parts of the centre and south

  • September 2021 rainfall was close to average for Tasmania overall and the highest since September 2017.
  • Rainfall was below average across most of the north-east with some sites in the East Coast District having totals in the driest 10% of September records.
  • In contrast, rainfall was above average for parts of central and south-eastern Tasmania.
  • A couple of sites had their highest September daily rainfall on record on the 10th, associated with a vigorous cold front crossing Tasmania.

Typical September temperatures for most

  • The mean maximum temperature for Tasmania as a whole was 0.18 °C warmer than the long-term (1961-90) average, but still the coolest since 2017.
  • Tasmania's mean minimum temperature was 0.13 °C warmer than the long-term (1961-90) average.
  • Daytime and night-time temperatures were higher than average in the north-east and along the north coast, but close to average elsewhere.
  • Several sites had their highest September temperature on record and a couple of others had their warmest September night on record.

Damaging winds and low-level snow

  • There were damaging winds across parts of Tasmania at times during the second and fourth weeks of September as cold fronts crossed the state.
  • Snow settled to low levels in parts of Tasmania on the 24th, mostly in western and southern areas, and over the Central Plateau, including down to around 100 m elevation in the Hobart area.

Hobart (Ellerslie Road)

  • Total rainfall for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 71.6 mm, which is 136% of the long-term average of 52.8 mm, making it the wettest September since 2016.
  • The mean daily maximum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 15.8 °C, which is 0.6 °C above the long-term average of 15.2 °C.
  • The warmest day was 26.0 °C on the 2nd (an early season record), and the coolest day was on the 13th when the temperature reached 11.0 °C.
  • The mean daily minimum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 6.9 °C, which is 0.4 °C above the long-term average of 6.5 °C.
  • The coldest morning was 1.8 °C on the 26th, and the warmest morning was on the 3rd when the minimum temperature was 15.3 °C.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 7 am on Tuesday 5 October 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
