What is a radar network upgrade?

Radar network upgrades improve weather radar coverage across Australia. Upgrades can include new parts, full replacement, relocation, or new radars.

Why improve weather radars?

Radars collect data used to deliver weather information for all Australians. Upgrades help make sure forecasts and warnings are accurate and reliable. This benefits communities, emergency and defence sectors, and industries such as agriculture and aviation.

How long does a radar project take?

It can take up to 36 months from the start of a project until a new radar begins to send data that we can use to provide weather information.

Lightning, tropical cyclones and other severe weather events can damage radars. The type of damage, location and age of the radar impacts the time it takes to return the radar to service.

How are radar projects decided?

Australia has one of the world's largest radar and observation networks. To make decisions about radar network improvements, we consider:

  • impact of variable and extreme weather
  • local industry and population
  • age of radar and availability of spare parts
  • advances in technology
  • available resources or funding.

New radars are usually funded by state and federal governments, in response to community demand.

What is the process for delivering radar projects?

Planning

We plan radar projects several years in advance and must take into account:

  • Commonwealth Procurement Rules – to ensure that the government and taxpayers get value for money
  • transport and logistics
  • high-risk weather events and seasons
  • availability of specialist equipment and technicians.

Milestones

1. Site selection

When relocating an existing radar or building a new one, the most complex stage is selecting the right site.  We consider:

  • current and future lines of sight
  • access to power and data communications
  • land ownership.

2. Design

We create designs and get building approvals, for projects that require this.

3. Site works

We order parts, prepare the site, and do other necessary work before we repair or install the radar. For example, laying foundations.

4. Installation

We install the new radar or the new parts for an existing radar. This can include key components such as the:

  • tower
  • antenna
  • radome (ball-style antenna covering)
  • radar cabinet.

5. Testing

We monitor data quality to confirm the radar is recording accurate and reliable data.

6. Go-live

The radar begins recording official data. Radar images are available on our website and the BOM Weather app.
