G’day from the Bureau with your National Weather Forecast around the country for Tuesday the 17th of March.

There will be a bit of weather going on around the country. The main focus will be this rain band moving through central and south-eastern parts of the country.

That will bring light to moderate falls through Victoria and New South Wales, and possibly some heavier falls through north-eastern parts of South Australia into far north-west New South Wales. It may even creep into parts of south-west Queensland as well.

High pressure will dominate the weather further south through Tasmania, southern South Australia and much of Western Australia. Showers and storms will continue across the tropical north.

It will be mostly fine for much of the eastern Australian coastline, although onshore winds will bring showers to the Queensland coast. We will also see a developing low in the Coral Sea.

Let’s look at all of that in more detail.

Firstly in Queensland, it will be a generally nice day, except north of the Fraser Island coast. Showers are expected there with the onshore flow, along with mild to warm conditions and temperatures in the low thirties.

Rain and possible thunderstorms are expected in far south-west Queensland, which could bring moderate to heavy falls.

Otherwise it will be mostly fine and dry across many of the flood-affected areas of central Queensland, and also dry through much of south-eastern Queensland.

Brisbane can expect a partly cloudy day with a top of 29 °C.

Moving down into New South Wales, a band of rain will affect southern and western parts of the state. This will bring light to moderate falls, but very little, if any, of that rain will reach eastern areas.

A few light showers are possible south of Sydney during the afternoon and evening hours. North-eastern parts of New South Wales will remain dry with mild to warm conditions.

Sydney can expect a cloudy day with a top of 31 °C. Canberra may see some of those showers and cooler conditions with a top of 24 °C.

Further north it will be warmer, and there is also a risk of heavier rainfall in north-western parts of New South Wales.

Moving down into Victoria, that band of rain will mainly affect northern and eastern parts of the state. It will move away during the afternoon and evening, leaving a cooler and cloudy day across much of the state.

Rain will continue across northern and eastern areas during the morning, while southern and western parts begin to clear after overnight rain from Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Temperatures will reach the low twenties in the south and the mid twenties in the north once the rain clears.

Melbourne can expect a few early showers clearing with a top of 21 °C.

Moving down into Tasmania, a mild day is expected again across northern and eastern areas. These regions have been quite warm recently, particularly around the Launceston area.

A cold front will move through during the afternoon and evening, bringing showers to western and southern parts of the state. The rain is not expected to reach northern and eastern areas.

Temperatures will reach the low to mid twenties in the north and east, while western areas remain cooler in the high teens.

Hobart can expect partly cloudy skies with a top of 22 °C.

South Australia will see the rain band moving across eastern and northern parts of the state, lingering across north-eastern areas.

That is where Severe Weather Warnings and heavy falls are possible, on top of the rainfall seen in recent weeks, so further flooding is possible in those areas.

Southern parts of South Australia will see much less rainfall after the light rain that fell on Monday.

Adelaide can expect a partly cloudy day with a top of 26 °C.

Elsewhere, temperatures will generally sit in the low to mid twenties through southern areas, and possibly only the low twenties in northern areas under cloud and rain. Some thunderstorms are also possible in those northern districts.

Moving over into Western Australia, high pressure will dominate much of the state, bringing dry and mild conditions to coastal areas along the south coast.

Inland areas will be warmer, with hot conditions returning along parts of the west coast as the west coast trough moves offshore.

Temperatures will reach the mid to high thirties in those areas. Perth can expect a warm, hot and sunny day with a top of 35 °C, while Geraldton may reach around 39 °C.

Hot conditions will also continue through northern parts of the Pilbara and Gascoyne, with temperatures in the mid thirties.

Across the Northern Territory, the very wet pattern will continue, with rain and storms from Darwin all the way down to Alice Springs as the trough slowly moves eastwards.

Another day of widespread rain and thunderstorm activity is expected from Uluru and Alice Springs through Tennant Creek and across much of the Top End.

This is unfortunate news for many flood-affected areas across the Territory.

Temperatures will reach the mid to high twenties in the south and the low thirties in the north.

Darwin can expect another wet and stormy day with a top of 31 °C.
