Hello, Ilana from the Bureau here with your national weather forecast for this weekend, Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th of April. Let’s start and have a look across the country.
Now through Saturday, through the east of the country, tomorrow is the last day that we’re going to see these very warm temperatures through north-east New South Wales and southern parts of Queensland, with the passage of this trough finally making it up towards that neck of the woods. Now, behind that frontal system, we’re seeing very cool conditions, quite a wintry blast through the south-east where we’ll see showers, snow to low levels and even maybe some hail. Now out west of the country, this low pressure trough will be deepening and that will bring some showers and gusty thunderstorms to parts of Western Australia.
Let’s now take a look state by state, starting with Queensland. Queensland is looking like it will have another dry and mostly sunny day, so we could see a little bit of morning fog through eastern parts. Now, the only areas that could see some showers will be coastal areas around the north tropical coast or up towards the Cape York Peninsula. But otherwise we’re really looking at quite a dry day. Temperatures will start to drop through the far inland, but still looking at warm temperatures, particularly about the south-east. So Brisbane, a sunny day and a top of 33°C.
Now into New South Wales, where we see the cold front moving its way up the far north. So we’ll still see some warm temperatures up there and maybe some showers and thunderstorms as well. The other area where we could see a little bit of rain and maybe even some snow is actually in the far south and through near the alpine areas. Elsewhere though, it’s quite a dry day through New South Wales, and behind that front, we’re seeing temperatures really start to come down to about 4°C to 8°C below average. So Sydney, after some temperatures in the mid 30s, will now be seeing a top of 27°C, and Canberra quite a wintry day with a top of 16°C.
Now into Victoria, where we’ll see these very wintry cold conditions coming through in this cool west south-westerly flow. Now we’ll see some cloud and shower activity in the southern half of the state. However, through the north it will be mostly clear. We may also see some snow down to about 1000m during the day. For Melbourne, 17°C and a few showers possible.
Into Tasmania, where we’ll see showers starting in the west but becoming quite widespread throughout the day with the passage of this secondary cold front moving through. Now again, it’s very cool in Tasmania. We could see snow as low as 700m during tomorrow morning, lifting slightly during the day. And we could also see some hail, particularly about western parts of the state. Hobart will be showery with a top of 13°C.
Now through South Australia, where we will still see a few showers through the agricultural areas, but they will contract further south later in the day. Generally, we’re seeing cooler than average conditions for April, including for the north, but it will still be sunny through interior parts. For Adelaide though, it will be 18°C and we may see a few showers.
Now into Western Australia, where we see this trough that will be deepening down the west coast. Now that system will start to bring some gusty thunderstorms to parts of the Pilbara, Gascoyne, Goldfields and even making its way down to parts of the South West Land Division. However, those storms won’t make it as far down south as Perth. Perth will see a sunny day and a top of 30°C.
Now for the Northern Territory, we are seeing quite a dry day as these south-easterly winds move in, so we could still see a few showers here and there about the Top End and up towards the Tiwi Islands, but otherwise really quite dry, including for Darwin, which will be mostly fine and will see a top of 33°C.
Now, if we have a look into Sunday to round off the weekend, generally we’re looking at quite a similar weather pattern, in particular through the south-east, where we continue to see these cool wintry conditions. So Melbourne will see 16°C, Hobart 13°C. Both of them could see showers. Sydney will see a drop down to just 23°C but a dry day. Now out west, Perth will see a top of 31°C and may see an isolated thunderstorm during the day. Up north, it will be warm and sunny for Brisbane, a top of 32°C, and Darwin will see a top of 34°C.
That’s all for our national weather forecast. As always, if you’d like some more information for your location, please visit us at the Bureau’s website, app or social media. Thanks so much for watching and have a great weekend.
