A vigorous cold front is set to sweep over south-eastern parts of the country as we round out the working week. Hi, I'm Jenny Sturrock and what we have at the moment is a big moisture infeed from the north.
We're seeing that focus through South Australia, Victoria and parts of Tasmania as well. Now, in addition to enhancing the shower activity, we are focused on some areas of severe storm activity today, and that's namely through parts of South Australia and then into central and north-eastern parts of Victoria and that risk will continue into the early evening tonight.
Now, tomorrow we will see a colder air mass sweep over southern parts of the country. Now, that will lower the snow level for Tasmania, so the odd chance of an isolated flurry about peaks can't be ruled out.
It also will bring the risk of some small hail with shower activity through western parts of Tasmania and down along the south-west coast of Victoria. Now, in addition to this, we'll also see the focus of the moisture shifting to New South Wales, and that will see the enhancement of the shower activity, and also draw the chance of the severe thunderstorms into New South Wales tomorrow.
Now, in addition to heavy rainfall, we are expecting the risk of damaging winds and large hail with that storm activity, and the timing of the storms is also important. During the late afternoon, early evening, when we're doing the school pick-up and also looking to knock off and start the weekend, that is when the key time for those severe storms is expected to peak.
So, please make sure you're aware of what the latest warnings are before you get out there and get about your business to start the weekend. In addition to the land-based impact, we are expecting a low pressure system to develop.
Now, that low pressure system could drive damaging winds right through the south-eastern parts of New South Wales early Friday into Saturday as well, and a Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds will be issued leading into that event. In addition to that, the three-day rainfall totals are also of note, enhanced across north-eastern parts of Tasmania, as well as the eastern parts of Victoria and south-east New South Wales, where rainfall totals across the three days could be in excess of 50-100 mm.
Now, this low pressure system is also going to enhance the sea state, so we are expecting enhanced swell as well as wave heights in excess of 5 m possible. So, that damaging surf could also lead to coastal erosion.
With so much severe weather around, from severe thunderstorms to the damaging winds and local flash flooding associated, as well as the coastal erosions it's really important that you stay up to date with our latest forecasts and warnings, and you can do that by following our website and looking at our socials. Thanks all for listening.
