Monday, 2 July 2018 - Monthly Climate Summary for Tasmania - Product code IDCKGC17R0
Tasmania in June 2018: Mild days, cool nights, near-average rain
Daytime temperatures were above average in Tasmania during June, whilst nights were a little below average overall. There were some relatively mild days and nights, but also some bouts of cool weather. Rainfall was close to average for most areas. Strong winds were much less frequent than in May.
Rain close to average
- Rainfall was close to average for much of Tasmania, but below average in the northeast and near the southeast and south coasts
- Tasmania's total rainfall for the month was almost double that received in June 2017, but less than half that from June 2016, and about 3% below the June average
- Except in the west (which had rain on most days), there was very little rain before the 8th and mostly only light falls from the 18th to the 28th
- A low pressure system and associated troughs and fronts brought moderate falls to the northwest on the 14th, the western half on the 15th, and the west and south on the 16th and into the 17th
- High pressure systems close to or over the State on many days meant strong and damaging winds were much less frequent than they were during May
Mostly mild days; both cold and mild nights
- Most days were warmer than the June average
- The 7th and 8th were especially mild, with some sites reaching into the high teens
- Daytime temperatures were cool in the week from the 14th to the 21st, struggling to reach double digits in several areas
- Nights were cooler than average during the first week of June, but ten days of warmer nights followed before cool weather set in again
- The morning of the 8th was particularly mild for June, with several locations staying above 10 °C
- Overall, Tasmania's mean daily maximum temperature was 0.34 °C above average, whilst the mean minimum temperature was 0.10 °C below average, giving a mean temperature 0.12 °C above average
Hobart (Ellerslie Road)
- Total rainfall for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was about two-thirds of average at 34.2 mm, with 25 mm of that falling between 6 pm on the 16th and 1 pm on the 17th
- The mean daily maximum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 12.8 °C, which is 0.8 °C above the long-term average of 12.0 °C. The warmest day was 17.9 °C on the 8th,
- The coolest day was on the 3rd when the temperature reached 9.8 °C, and on both the 28th and 29th Hobart only reached 9.9 °C; these three days below 10 °C compare to a long-term June average of about six such cold days (note that this corrects a previously published statement)
- The mean daily minimum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 5.1 °C, which is 0.1 °C below the long-term average of 5.2 °C. The coldest morning was 1.8 °C on the 6th, and the warmest morning was on the 9th when the minimum temperature was 8.8 °C
- Hobart's strongest wind gust for the month was 70 km/h on the 8th; in May there were 10 days with gusts that strong

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 2 July 2018. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
